Camelot could do with out its glowing white mage for now, everything was in order the kingdom was secure, and they were having a small Era of peace and tranquillity in the kingdom ever since Arthur had become king. Merlin knew though with new kingship, would come new challenges. It happened all the time, even in the silver age there had been a challenger to the new king, who would attack his reign. Every king has their share of problems, but Merlin was always their their consul, the most important man in the kingdom, the one all the kings listened to and depend on for sage advice and magical help in a time of great need. Whenever magic was afoot Merlin was turned to for help, Merlin was the one the king's and the queens would beg for assistance, Merlin was also used in a fixture for making alliances, through marriage, and other ways.
King Arthur would need him even more, he was not born into the life of a prince, in fact Merlin had taken him away at birth from his mother Lady Igraine, the wife of the king of Camelot. She was seen to have died in Childbirth, but on Merlin's very concealed orders she was assassinated just after birth, poison. In fact Merlin was the one to start the cogs going but someone else gave the final order, Merlin could say quite clearly his hands were not in that mess. It has been a sad thing to get rid of Lady Igraine in such a way, for she had been a powerful and very generous, kind, understanding friend to him. He did not kill her lightly, but the king was a tyrant, she needed to die and believed his only heir died with her. Sadly the fair lady and his friendship with her, had died having been sacrificed for his power games, his control of a kingdom and destruction of tyrant Uther Pendragon. Arthur had been living the life of a commoner, after Uther's death Merlin became Regent, and now Arthur was king, the man Merlin believed would herald the golden age.
He had helped Arthur for now, but now Merlin would let the king slug it out on his own for a tiny bit, while Merlin went incognito around the realm, travelling searching, for magical artefacts or new information. Maybe even get to know people of different kingdoms. Who knew but Merlin was going to sort out something he had found many centuries ago about an ancient power that grew in a dark glade, the name Lady Morgause stuck to the tree in the glade.
Merlin was sat on a small horse pulled cart wearing a dusty brown hooded robe with a sword at his side, he had made himself look like a poor travelling man, and old man with a white beard and walking stick. No one would recognise him or think him a threat. He had been travelling this road for a while now the driver new the directions but he had asked for scenic route to be undisturbed, and he lay there in the back. Until the cry's of the Evil Queens guards came. And then the crys of a girl, he frowned and sniffed the air. There was magic, untouched not tampered with, it was unmistakable, he knew the king he had met it before. It was Fae magic and it had yet to be used to its full potential.
He opened his eyes. "Driver that women and those guards to them," he watched as the cart went faster for the driver did not question him though looked as if he was mad, and he watched there a women that he felt recognisable in his sight before. Where had he seen her, ah yes something to do with the dark one. He had heard about her in whispers and in dream, he knew not her name but her face. He found when people came to him in dream and he later saw them they were important. He did not call it destiny, it was his magical calling to him to help those people, as he would get something out of it himself. They driver went around her and stopped the guard's the women stopped behind him, possibly to shout a warning at what she saw as old man getting himself into trouble.
"Tell me why does the Queens guards chase down this women?" The Men on the horses stirred and the lead one laughed and spat on the ground, Merlin just acted the determined old man who had nothing to lose. "Who are you old man to demand us such a thing we will cut you down where you stand!" Was the leaders reply and he drew his sword "now let us pass our issue is with her not you." For a moment He made himself lock as if he was considering it, but he turned back to the leader. "It seems the Queens forces do not know how to treat Lady and an Old ma, tell me please on what charge to you chase this women," The leader growled something out and threw a royal degree at his feet. "For consorting with enemies of the Queen?" He let out a low chuckle and sighed walking forwards towards the lead horse, he heard a sharp gasp from behind him as the leader brought up his sword to his neck. "I see, who might this enemy be Snow white, or a fantasy demon?" He turned his back for a moment and gave the women a kind smile, he purposefully looked at her making it seem he did not notice the leader trotting towards a partially deaf old man. "It seems Regina's tricks are growing st...." He didn't finish the leader had tried to stick him with his sword, but at quick turn, quicker than was possible for an old man as frail as he looked, the leader was clobbered with the staff and sent flying off his horse. The leader angered stood back up but Merlin had vanished.
"Tell me Sir knight, since when did loyal Soldiers and honourable men become as thuggish as the common thug." The leader charged but he waved his staff and in an Instant the man was no longer there. He stepped forward and picked something up off the floor it was a bird. "There we go new life, fly away, fly away," he blew the bird away and as he did his features changed. Into that of his own self, his staff to his white oak staff, and his clothes back to what they should be. "That's better, now then." He turned to the others who were already frightened and ready to run, he just decided now for dramatics. The sky around them darkened and lightning struck the ground sending the horses running with the guards, one stayed for now. Because he had kept them in freezing spell " Run home and tell Queen Regina that this women is under the White mage's protection and not a hair on her head is to be harmed." The Next bit he used magic to carry his order in a loud voice, that echoed around, "now leave or you and she shall suffer my wrath if innocent blood is spilled today!" He struck the ground with his staff, another lightning strike and the man fled on his horse. He turned now to the Women.
"I'm sorry my dear about the theatrics, but you shall not be bothered for now." He gave her a charming smile and with a wave of his hand his staff vanished, Though a blue mark appeared on his hand for a moment and then vanished as well. He began to walk closer but stopped before he got too close and gave a polite bow. "I am Merlin the White Mage, a pleasure to make you acquaintance."
