The sunlight was a welcome change from the few days of rain. Water still flowed into the drains but the sun had dried the sidewalks and umbrellas were no longer needed. Winnie enjoyed being outside too much to really appreciate the rain and after she nearly died from being rain drenched while back in the Enchanted Forest, she found it even more difficult to venture out much into the storming skies. Now that it was sunny again, she was glad to take a walk this morning, to tend to her own small garden and drink morning tea in the lawn chairs. Winnie knew that she was meant for the outdoors and merely being in it raised her mood considerable.
Soon after she finished water the garden, she ventured towards the town center, where Granny’s stood. As was often with Winnie, she held a book in front of her face, Evelina or the History of a Young Lady’s Entrance into the World plastered across the cover. Winnie was always reading when she had the chance. She could be found laying in a field with Gulliver’s Travels, walking in the park with Macbeth or keeping the plants in the nursery company with A Botanist’s Guide To Enjoying Life. Right now she decided Granny's was a good place for a few chapters. Though some of the Storybrooke residents sought out breakfast, lunch and dinner at Granny’s, Winnie only made it there every few days and only on the quiet hours. The crowds that Granny’s could house unnerved her, so she avoided the place when it was very busy. However, it was a lovely place to tuck into a corner and read a book while she nibbled on fruit salad when it was slow and quiet.
Winnie reached Granny’s and held the door open for an older couple as they came out. She smiled at them but they looked at her with some distrust and anger, and her features quickly fell. It was not completely unusual for people to be a bit startled of her, not after all the things her curse self, Freddie, had done. She tried not to let it affect her so deeply, but for someone like Winnie that was not easily done. She was much too sensitive and eager to please for her to be able to let go of any anger directed at her, but Winnie couldn’t blame them when Freddie had made it so easy for people to dislike her. But Winnie was not anything like Freddie and she tried very hard to make that clear. Not everyone was willing to give her the chance. With a tiny sigh, she headed inside, feeling much less dapper.
Looking up, she caught sight of someone that made her gasp softly and drop her book. Snow White. Despite the fact that neither Winnie nor any of her surviving family had ever met the Queen, she had been deeply impacted by Snow White since she was a young child. Her father had met Snow White once, or at least had attended one of the then Princess’s rallies, and he had had pledged his support to her. Her father had been killed by the Evil Queen’s forces for his support of Snow White and after that, their mother had insisted they stay out of the crosshairs between Snow White and The Evil Queen. Still, Winnie knew her father was a good man and had pledged his support to the right woman. Winnie made an aborted attempt to retrieve her book but Snow White was directly in front of her and all Winnie could do for a moment was stare with an open mouth, likely a comical sight.
It took her a moment to gather her wits about her. “Oh,” she cried out, embarrassed and mortified to be so ungraceful in front of such a graceful woman. Winnie sunk down in a curtsy so low she was practically sitting on the floor. It was a little sloppy, as it had been some time since she had performed such an act, but at least she didn’t fall over. “Your Majesty,” she said, her voice shaking. “It’s an honor to meet you. My father thought very highly of you.” She wasn’t quite sure she could stand on her own, her legs were shaking so badly, so she kept in the lowly position, head bowed, though she yearned to stare upon the beautiful Queen’s face.
(I think this would take place after the first curse broke, but it would work after the second curse, I think, too. You choose.)
and because I'm obsessed with Winnie's clothing.
