History: Madeline Bamborough was born a princess. When she was in her early teens, her mother passed away suddenly and mysteriously. Her father mourned for nearly two years before he suddenly remarried a beautiful woman he met during one of his hunting trips. As often happens, stepmother and stepdaughter did not get along, and Madeline was beloved by the people of her father’s kingdom. One night spoke back to her stepmother and claimed that it was she or her brother who would be ruler and not her stepmother. During the night, her stepmother laid a curse to her that would change her life forever.
When Madeline awoke, she turned to see a room full of maids staring at her and hordes of guards with their spears pointed at her. Madeline opened her mouth to inquire what they were doing, but all that came out was a huge burst of fire. She looked down and saw a long scaly tail and claws. It dawned on her that she was a dragon and she immediately realized it was her stepmother who had done such a thing to her. The guards were coming towards her, and she realized with sadness that she had killed one with the flames from her mouth. Before they could hurt her, she burst into the air and fled.
Over time being a dragon affected her personality. She was alone, isolated, feared and hated by those that had once loved her, but the truth was it was more than that. It was also the curse her stepmother had placed on her, removing the negative qualities from herself and putting them into Madeline. Her stepmother became loved and Madeline reviled. She attempted on several occasions to show the people she was a good dragon but was always met with threats and spears, so eventually she gave up. She became the dreaded dragon and there was one more thing that she found had changed within her.
Sometime later, a brave traveler entered her cave dwelling and was immediately drawn to her piles of gold and jewels. Madeline came upon him and roared. There was a small fight but instead of killing her, the man laid a kiss on her scaly head. Miraculously this turned her back into a human form. The man explained that he had been told his true love would appear as something he did not expect and that he was rather relieved she was actually a human and his true love what not just a dragon. Of course, Madeline’s body was changed but her mind was not; she was still cold, greedy and craved jewels and gold. Fortunately, the traveler had similar desires as she did. She married the traveler and the two set upon becoming talented thieves in the Enchanted Forest. They were not foul proof, though, and one day, the traveler was caught by guards. Madeline managed to free him but they were then forced to flee. They knew they would no longer be safe in the forests and fled to the Land Without Magic, landing in early twentieth century New Orleans.
There Voodoo was at the height of it’s popularity and New Orleans was a city of glamour, intrigue and wealth. It was a place that the pair fit in well. They both picked up some of the magic of Voodoo, though Madeline was more intrigued than her husband was and picked it up more than he did. Madeline became aware of a very special diamond called the Devil’s Eye, which was said to have magical qualities. Though she didn’t know exactly what those qualities were, it was still a beautiful, impressive jewel and Madeline used many people in her quest to gain the jewel, including several orphans and a pudgy little man named Stubbs, who was rather in love with her. In the end, she gained the Devil’s Eye and found that it was able to keep a person young. Already obsessed with youth, she was thrilled at the prospect, but the law came a little too close to their operation and the Medinas were once more made to flee. They came to miss their home, though, and decided to travel back to the Enchanted Forest, finding more clever ways to abate their greed. Thanks to the powers Madeline had acquired, they were able to hide their identities with new faces, beautiful, young and unknown.
Since obsessed with jewels and treasure, Madeline and her husband found a new way to make wealth, turning their treasure and gold into beautiful pieces. Madeline became the most sought after jewelry designer in the Enchanted Forest. That probably wouldn’t have been the case if her clients knew how she continued to obtain jewels. When she first started, child labor wasn’t against the law and so that’s what Madeline used. She hated children, but it wasn’t as if she had to see them much anyway. The children called her Madame Medusa because they saw her as a monster, even though she was no longer in a dragon’s body, and it was said that one cold look from her meant they were dead on the spot, though that wasn’t quite true.
Madeline had the misfortune to be in a part of the kingdom affected by Regina’s curse when it hit the land. Thrust into Storybrooke, Madame Medusa became ‘Maddie’, the harried orphanage supervisor. No longer graceful, she was known to be clumsy and something as a joke in the town. She despised all the children and was not kind to them, at least not behind closed doors. She didn’t beat them, but she was somewhat mentally abusive and she spent more time ignoring them and drinking than anything else. When the curse was undone, she remembered herself and the elegant, high born being she had been; the husband she had had. Instead of rushing to find him, Madeline carefully got herself together, fixing her hair, her clothes before she stepped out into the streets.
History is based on The Laidly Worm of Spindleston Heugh and Madame Medusa from The Rescuers. But of course twisted with their own Once way.
