The sun beat down relentlessly on the brow that was beaded with sweat, but an arm came up to quickly wipe it away at the feel of the first trickle sliding down towards his eye. It was hard to see when that happened and given that the man had a hammer very close to a thumb right now, it was wise to keep his vision as clear as possible. "Just a few more adjustments..." He murmured to himself as he brought the hammer down on the nail.
The sound was a loud bang with each stroke, but along with it came the knowledge that at least this day’s work was almost done. Today was a free day since the mines weren’t in need of tending and Leroy had already checked around to see if anyone needed a hand and finding no one, he finally had the time to finish something he’d been toiling on for quite some time now. Stopping for a moment to take a drink from the canteen at his hip and taking in the fresh air, he had time to contemplate many things and of course time to allow his mind to wander and wander it did before he caught himself and tucked those flights of fancy away.
A dwarf’s tasks didn’t include dreaming; although once upon a time, that had been his name until the day someone had dashed all of those hopes and dreams, crushing them like dry leaves under their boot heels. But, that was another life, another time, but that didn’t mean he still couldn’t be friendly did it? (Well as friendly as one aptly named Grumpy could be anyways.
With a small smile of satisfaction (since a small smile was about as good as it got with him), he put his tools away and patted the boat with a feeling of accomplishment, knowing that he’d put a lot of hard work into something and it had turned out alright. Now maybe he would make a stop over to Granny’s and grab a quick bite before doing anything else. That had been his plan anyways, but his feet seemed to have other ideas as they moved in another direction as if of their own accord.
Leroy soon found himself headed in another familiar direction towards where another familiar face he knew all too well would be at this time of day. He willed his feet to turn around and take him back the other way because seeing her only drove the knife deeper into his heart, but damned if his heart would listen to the common sense of his head. Soon, he found himself ‘casually’ walking by her as if he didn’t notice her and then suddenly, he turned and saw her standing nearby. “Good afternoon Astrid. I almost didn’t see you there.” He greeted her with that all too familiar gruff tone in his voice, “Lovely day out isn’t it?”
