Hello Friends!
I know we have a few awesome members on the spectrum and a few mothers who think their children might be on the spectrum so I wanted to do a post here (did one on my personal facebook) to honor the struggles and awesomeness that comes with Autism. LET'S LIGHT IT UP BLUE!
Let me tell you a little bit about my story.
2 of my cousins have Aspergers, and so does my brother. Coolest brother ever. He is one of the smartest people I know.
My son was behind and I noticed he was behind at about 1 year old. He would not eat solid foods, heck he did not even want oatmeal. He was not talking. He was friendly and happy though, and to me that was the most important. Light it up Blue! It is Autism Awareness DAY! Allow me to educate you on my son's issues. He did not eat solid food until 3 years. He still only says about 5 words, but he tries. He sometimes rocks back and forth for comfort if he gets nervous, but he is amazing. He has super human strength (literally), loves people and can sense if they are good or bad. Even though he doesn't speak he can read human emotion. He has something called Sensory Processing Disorder. www.spdfoundation.net/about-sensory-processing-disorder.html Basically the signals he gets sent from his nerves to his brain ping everywhere. He may look like he is in deep thought, because he is. His level of intelligence will be off the charts. I love my son and I am so proud of every single accomplishment. I appreciate the small things like him chewing a carrot or eating some cottage cheese. He has taught me to be a stronger and better mother every single day. It has not been easy, but it has been rewarding.
Just wanted to let you know if you ever need anyone to talk to I'm a great listener. Autism rates have increased as far as our ability to recognize them, so let's light it up blue for one day to honor research and the people.
