Personality:
What do you want me to say? My life's fucked up. I mean, The Hat ruined my life, really. But I can't blame that. It's just a tool to get a job done, and all I did was provide a service. It's the people who I hate. They would come to me, begging me to "just" take them here, or there, or anywhere. And every time they took a piece of me with them.
I used to smile, you know. I used to laugh, and have dreams.
Now, I can only ever manage it for Paige, and even then I feel it cover my face like a matador's mask stretched too tight. I care about her so much, but I can't afford to reach out. I've been scarred so many times, lost so much… I think losing her mother was the last straw. So, what, you want to call me crazy? 'Ooh, look, it's the Mad Hatter, haha, what a psycho!' If I stripped everything you loved from you, over and over again, just for your personal gains, and left you a broken shell of your former self, you might eventually get mad, too. If you ever had your head chopped off after being stranded in a world sprung from Jason Voorhees' worst nightmares, you might find yourself a TINY bit paranoid. If you were cursed to be the only one to remember a world of happiness and love, you might feel a shade of the isolation I do.
But what do you care?
The Hat doesn't work anymore.
History:
I grew up in the Enchanted Forest, obviously. It was nice. My father used to take me horseback riding. We didn't own the horses, of course. MY father worked at a local stable and when the horses weren't needed we would sneak them out for rides. Those were probably the best years of my life, just riding with him. Course, I'll never ride another horse again, but those first few years are my untainted, perfect childhood. The one everyone thinks I didn't have.
I think the first I heard about The Hat, I was 16. I didn't come into contact with it for the first time until I was nearly 20, but I don't want to talk too much about that. Just know that the only good that ever comes from that story is I met Paige's mother through one of my first trips in The Hat.
Something I will say is I remember just going from world to world for a time after figuring out how it worked. I saw… wonders. Not just "Wonderland," that's for sure. That came later. No, I saw a city under the sea(Atlantis); I saw deep, untamed jungles(Jungle Book); a romantic city tucked away that seemed to be completely made of gold(El Dorado); I saw a world where cartoon characters came to life, and lived amongst regular people as though nothing were strange about it(Roger Rabbit), just to name a few of the more… memorable places I can think of.
Oh, I suppose, thinking this over, I'm not giving a good description of my past. But frankly, I don't want to.
Likes:
I love greenery and nature. Anything normal - anything borne of the ground, without the intervention or involvement of magic - that's what I like. The smell of oak soothes me, for some reason. And, a third thing I enjoy-- besides my daughter, obviously - would be animals, especially dogs. I have a special fondness for pets, what with always being with the horses as a child and since I had the best dog growing up, Karma. I miss him.
Dislikes:
Hats. Magic. Green beans. Ignorance. Green beans. I could go on for a while. I guess my biggest pet peeve, though, are obvious signs of anxiety: nail biting; pacing; joint popping; etc. Not sure what it is about that, but when people get anxious around me, I want to toss them out my window.
Roleplay Example(Written 4-5 years ago don't judge me):
Spade waved good bye to his old friend, Koji. He was feeling wonderful. Amazing, even. He looked down at his message again. It was weird. Spade, I need you to go to the Western Air Temple. You are needed. This will increase your potential, and lift the Fire Nation to heights they have not known since the days of the Phoenix King, Ozai. You have been lied to for years and I need to help set things right for you. Meet me for instructions at the gate. I will expect you in one week. Lastly, come ALONE!
That was what had stopped Spade asking Koji to come, too. Spade wanted his friend to be here for this. It felt like breaking their promise to change the world together. Spade shook off these thoughts. The mystery person had asked Spade to come alone, not work alone. He would ask for Koji’s help after his month long trip.
He immediately went below deck to take a nap. He was extremely tired, but yet sleep did not come easy for the young fire bender. He sat down and looked at all he had brought with him. There were sentimental things, alongside practical things. There was a picture of the first time he fire bended, and his first caught fugitive.
There were swords and shields, though Spade, same with Koji, had forged his own sword. Koji had chosen black onyx, while Spade had chosen diamond. His explanation was that black and white were opposites, yet they needed each other to exist. Spade immediately went into a flashback.
Spade was looking through all the different forms of swords. He wanted to copy the master swordsman, Sokka, but everyone else had as well, and there were no more meteorites. Koji said, “I want this one!” and pointed to a black mineral deposit.
The master said, “Good choice, young one. That is black onyx, and if you put in a drop of steel, it is near indestructible.” Koji beamed, and Spade looked faster. He wanted to find something pleasing as well. He searched and found shiny crystals. Spade picked up a piece big enough for a sword, and said, “Is this good, master?”
The master studied him carefully, and said, “That is a very unique choice. You have chosen diamond, another near indestructible mineral. It is also the opposite of onyx, some say.”
Spade’s mouth dropped. That was unique. He thought long and hard, and asked to speak with Koji alone. The master obliged, and Spade turned to Koji. “I think we should do something to really make ours unique.”
“What?” Koji asked, curiosity written all over his face at Spade’s idea.
“I think we should make the swords, but we should put a clump of the other’s in our swords.”
“I’m not following you,” Koji said, an eyebrow raised. “Are you feeling okay?”
“I’m fine!” Spade said impatiently. “I mean, I put a bit of diamond in your sword, and you put a bit of black onyx in my sword. That way, we are like the image of opposites, utterly, and completely. But also, we can’t be one without the other.”
Koji loved the idea from the start. “Let’s do it!” He immediately ran to the diamond hole and grabbed a hand-sized lump of diamond. He then tossed a lump of black onyx at Spade, and told the master, “We’re ready!”
Koji went first, and Spade sat in relative silence. After several intense hours, Koji came back, sooty-faced. “I’m not done with the sword, but I am done melting, so you go now.” Koji then ran off.
Spade got up and went to the boiler room. He dumped his lump of diamond down, and began making a super hot fire. He grew very tired, running back and forth getting firewood. Spade got at least three splinters. He didn’t stop, though. After about three hours, Spade put the diamond in. He watched the diamond melt.
When it was completely melted, Spade left it there. He ran to get the lump of black onyx, and put it right in the center of the mold of the sword. He then poured the diamond liquid in the mold. After it partially cooled, he put it in the fire, to hear the sizzling cooling sounds. Spade ran to get Koji. Koji was already fighting the master with his new sword. Spade could see Koji had done something different. He had put the mold of diamond in with the black onyx, so you could see streaks of crystal studded all along it.
Spade walked right up to the master, looked him straight in the eye and said, “May I cut in?”
Spade’s flashback was suddenly cut off. One of his soldier said, “Sir, there is a storm coming. It won’t hit us, but it may blow us off course. Should we anchor in, or try to fight it?”
Spade sighed. “No need to work extra hard over nothing. Anchor us in. You can also have the rest of the night off. Tell everyone. I want you back to work at sunrise.” The sailor smiled a big smile, and ran to tell everyone. Spade smiled as well, and lay down. This time, sleep came, and Spade welcomed it with open arms. He slept deeply, with no dreams.
Lastly... Where did you hear about us?
