Henry was sat outside of the stables on the grass reading the storybook, he was waiting, waiting for his gramp's to turn up, he had told him to meet him here, that he had a surprise for him today, Henry had wondered if this meant he was actually finally going to get to ride a horse instead of just grooming it and talking to it. He had been wanting to do that ever since the curse had broken, ever since gramp's had begun to teach him cool things that heroes did, like how to sword fight, he was getting much better at it and he was sure sooner or later he would be able to take down a Dragon just like gramp's did for King Midas.
That Story actually happened to be the one Henry was reading right now, he had read it many times before, but it was such an awesome story that showed how really cool his gramp's really was, not many heroes could take down a dragon and he really wanted be exactly like gramp's some day. He actually also wanted to ask gramp's if he would tell him the story as well, because it was one thing to read about it in a book but to have gramp's tell him about it would be just awesome.
Henry looked up from the book for a moment and looked around before looking at the stables where his horse that his gramp's had picked out for him was, he really hoped they were riding today and not another session of getting to know the horse, while he didn't mind it and it was actually quite nice to talk to the horse he felt that he could ride it now, he was excited at that prospect. IT was then he heard a truck pull up, Henry shot straight up closing the book and ran to the front the stables just knowing it had to be his grandpa's truck. "Gramp's!" He called out excitedly.

David had been told in no uncertain terms by both mothers and his wife that Henry was NOT to be hurt by riding the horse today. He had told the boy to meet him at the stables as David had a surprise for him. And he did have a surprise, as well as a joke up his sleeve. Henry had been grooming and talking to the horse for weeks now. David had made sure that Henry and the horse had that connection, and more importantly Henry understood and respected the horse. Henry was the grandson that David was more than happy to say was his. Henry was so interested in being a hero, David had told him all about the things that heroes would do, however he also made sure that Henry knew it wasn't the skills he was teaching the young boy that made him a hero, it was what he did with the skills that would de3icde if he was a hero or not. However that said David didn't have a doubt in his mind that Henry wasn't a hero, he already was, he'd brought Emma back to them and saved them all just as much as Emma had when the curse broke. He owed having his memories, his life back to his grandson and his daughter. David thought about the skills he'd been taught, the skills he'd taught himself mostly, and what he had to learn after being shoved into the Prince life after his twin was killed. He thought about it every so often, and was thankful as all that led him to Snow and then Emma and Henry. As he pulled up to the stables he turned off the car engine and laughed to himself hearing 'Gramps!' He laughed and high-fived the young lad. "Hey Henry! Are you ready for today?" He asked and went to the back of the truck to get the fake surprise for Henry. What Henry didn't know was that David had already been to the stables that morning. He'd mucked out the stable and groomed the horses. He then put a new saddle (engraved with Henry's name) on the holder next to Henry's riding buddy. But David hadn't told Henry this. "Okay... here's your surprise... ready?" He said and pulled out... a new shovel. He watched the boy's face. Henry was a polite boy, a loving boy who respected his elders immensely, which was rare no doubt. He was mature for his age and because of this David had won the argument to let him ride. He led Henry, and his new shovel into the stables. David looked to the boy, "Henry... why don't you go see the horse, I'll be right behind you." He said with another smirk. Henry was no doubt expecting a messy stable with no saddle in sight, luckily for Henry, he'd find a clean stable with a new engraved saddle.

Henry waited Patiently his book tucked into his arm as his gramp's began to get out of the car, he was really excited because he did have some idea of what they were doing to be doing today, or rather he hoped they were doing today, Henry just knew he was ready to ride the horse. He had done everything his gramp's asked, even the stuff he really didn't like doing, but he had done it because his gramp's said it was all part of getting to know the horse, before being able to ride it, Henry wasn't entirely sure but he listened because gramp's knew what he was doing, he had been taught this stuff. He had told his gramp's the last few days that he knew he was ready for actually riding the horse, in fact he wouldn't stop going on about it, he had also tried talking to both his mums and his gram's about it to try and see if he could get them to talk to his gramp's about it, though they were more worried that he would hurt himself if he went horse riding. He had assured them though that when he did get to horse riding he would be fine, gramp's would not allow him to get hurt and he would be really careful.
Henry grinned excitedly high-fiving his grampa as he held as he did it , "yup, I'm ready grampa," he bounced on his toes a bit watching him to see what he was getting from the back of his truck, he wanted to see what he had got there, was it something to do with riding the horse perhaps, he stayed where he was and waited ,"are we going to ride today?" Henry asked, curiously, before taking his book and putting it into his backpack. So it was a surprise, but what was the surprise, was it a saddle perhaps? "Yes," Henry replied with betted breath just waiting until his gramp's uncovered exactly what it was. It was a shovel, a shovel for mucking out horses to be exact, the excitement on Henry's face dropped, but he quickly replaced it with a thankful smile not wanting to upset his gramp's, Henry was disappointed though, he had really wanted to ride them today, but it looked like he was going to have to clean up the stable instead. "Thank you gramp's i love it," he replied being polite, like he should do.
He followed his gramp's into the stable he was still slightly excited though because he still got the see the horse, he really liked the horse, he gad gotten to know it quite well ever since had been given it by his gramps, in Henry's mind it was the best horse ever. Then he was told to go in first and when he looked up at his gramp's he frowned ever so slightly, why was he smirking was there something going on that he didn't know about. Henry didn't know but he nodded and walked into where his horse was and stopped.
The Eleven year old boy stood there taking in what he saw in the front of him, there was the horse which in Henry's Opinion looked happy to see him with the noises it was making, just like he was happy to see it, but the stable itself, it was clean like really, clean someone had already been in here before him. "Gramp's?" Henry questioned silently before he smiled realizing what must of happened, gramp's must of already been in here, he must of been playing a trick, but why ? Another thing Henry noticed was how well groomed the horse was, he smiled again and then that's when he saw it, he didn't run he didn't want to scare the horse, he walked over his eyes widening in excitement, there was a saddle already there and it had his name on it, he traced his name before turning to face his grampa. "Thank you grampa, thank you," he rushed over to hug him, "does this mean we get to learn how to ride today?" He asked looking up at him, his eyes shining, he was extremely happy.

David chuckled to himself as Henry took the shovel and told him he 'loved it'. Charming knew the boy was being polite, which was a great quality, but he was hoping for something a bit more... much more. He smirked hearing 'Gramps?' as Henry went into the paddock, and grinned when an excited Henry hugged him on realising that they were riding today. Well Henry was. David would stay off the horses for the first few times to help guide Henry's horse until he was more ocnfident on the horse. "You're welcome Henry. Now I'm going to teach you from start to finish how to get your horse ready for riding, whilst riding and how to take everything off... I'd imagine you are ok with the plan for today?" He laughed and ruffled Henry's hair a little. David had been looking forward to this all morning. Charming never got a chance to show Emma how to ride, he wondered if his daughter knew or not, it wasn't something that had ever came up... maybe he'd get a chance to show her... even at 28, you are never too old to learn for sure. Charming got everything ready as he handed Henry a riding hat, "You wear this or I'll have lots of angry women after me." He told him with a smile and showed Henry how to adjust it to his size so it fitted correctly. "Now horseback riding involves more than hopping on and riding off into the sunset. It can be dangerous and you need time to learn... so relax and remember to be paticent. He told his not patient grandson. "Now, usually you'll bring your tack out of the tack room. Remember to check it's in good shape, no holes, no tears, it needs to be perfect. He told Henry an showed him the one he'd already prepared. David made sure to drum it into Henry that horse riding was a privilage, that the horse was allowing it to happen, they weren't making the horse do it. "Now to put on the halter, you call your horse," Charming gave Henry the leather halter to put on the horse. "Remember that goes over the horse's head, and you will want to strap it tightly enough so it doesn't slip, but not tight enough to be uncomfortable for the horse." He said, David was there to make sure that it was completely on the horse's head, Charming knew all too well that many an escaped horse could have been avoided had they simply ensured that the halter was on completely. When Charming was confident that Henry had sorted the halter himself he promised next time he could try the tack himself too. "Ok I want you to watch me lead the horse, you'll do it next time, ok?" He checked with his grandson and showed him how to lead the horse into the main barn area. He then attached the cross ties to the metal ring on the halter and clipped the metal loop on the sides, near the horses mouth. "See where I've put the clips and tightened it?" He checked with Henry, "Everytime it must look like that, do it slow your first few times and if in doubt, get someone to check it." He told him with a smile. Charming went and put on the saddle blanket first, he slid the saddle blanket over the horse's back, with the front of the blanket just at the ridge of the front shoulders. "Henry when doing this make sure there are no sudden motions, as your horse may spook at any startling movement. And then you'll get hurt and I'll have the three angry women after me." He siad not wanting to be too hard on the boy his first actual riding lesson. Charming then lifted the saddle over the horse's back, placing it correctly and showing Henry where everything went and how to secure everything that needed to be secured.
After that they both put the bridle on the horse, he show Henry the spacing and how tight it should all be. "Ok now we'll walk it out and get you actually riding." He said to Henry and showed Henry how to walk the horse out of the stable and to the mounting block. "uncool as it might be, we'll use this first time. After that you can do all your hopping on." He told him and smiled. He showed him last checks of the straps and everything before handing him the reins, "Okay, now to get on do what I tell you ok? First hold the reins and grab the horse's mane or saddle horn with your left hand, but don't pull the horse, put your left foot here on the stirrup... good and swing that leg over..." He told him as the horse moved slightly, "Don't worry that's normal." He reassured in case he had to, but Henry had seen this a million times he was sure.
Once Henry was on the horse he beamed with pride, "Great Henry! Now pull up the reins, and get each at equal length while holding them over the center of the horse's neck with its head facing straight ahead. Now are you ready?" He checked and stood away, slightly from the horse and Henry, David still had a leader on the horse so that he could stay in control a little. "Now Henry, urge the horse foreward by gently squeezing your calves into the horse's sides. Not too much though and you say your "giddap" or "get up" to go forward, "whoa" to stop. As you do." He told him and smiled as Henry started to go round the field that was fenced off for first time riders. David felt pride s punch as Henry was staying on the horse's back and concentrating on his balance and keeping the horse under your control. Charming smiled, "Great job Henry!" He said and left the lead he had slack to let Henry have a little more freedom as they went round the area. "How are you feeling?" He asked his grandson.

little Prince in training ------------------- The Little Prince-Henry -------------------
Henry looked up at his grampa with excitement showing in his eyes still hugging him, he should of realized this was a trick, but he had been so used to looking after the horse now. Henry was extremely happy though while he didn't mind looking after the horse and getting to know it, doing what his grampa told him, he just wanted to start being able to ride it. To take a few more steps to becoming a hero or a knight, like his grampa, he was finally going to get to learn, his grampa was going to teach him, Henry could not be happier about it.
"Yes Grampa I am," He was certainly okay with the plan it sounded extremely exciting, and as Henry spoke he was almost bouncing on his feet. "I can't wait, thank you so much gramp's," he said laughing as he ruffled up his hair. He really could not wait, he was extremely excited, and every second wasted not riding, was a moment of the day they could not ride at all.
He watched his grampa carefully ready to see what they were going to do first, how they went about it. Henry was paying full attention, wanting to learn everything he could from his grampa. Henry really really wanted to start riding. "What do we do first grampa?" Henry asked his tone excited and his eyes wide, as he watched him bring over a riding hat. He giggled as he mentioned having lots of angry women after him. "Okay Grampa but only to save you from mom's" Henry grinned cheekily and began to put the hat on his head, after his grampa showed him how to do it. "Thank you," Henry said putting it on properly after he had been shown. Henry then turned back to look at his grampa as he spoke, listening to every word, "I can be patient," Henry told him, after all he had been very patient in the days running up to this. In also waiting to lean how to ride. Though he didn't feel very patient right now, he really, really wanted to get started the excitement was a huge. "Okay stay Patient otherwise I might get hurt?" Henry questioned to make sure he had gotten it right, Henry didn't want to make a mistake, he wanted to make his grampa and his family proud, not disappoint them.
Henry kept listening to him, and looked at him as he showed the tack he had already prepared for him, he nodded. Henry smiled happy that he was being taught this, every time his Grampa had spoken, and every time they had been to the stables, he had tried to tell him that riding the horse was a privilege. Henry had started to understand what his grampa had been trying to tell him, that the horse was allowing him to ride, he could never, ever make the horse want to be ridden. That was one of the things his grampa had taught him about. One thing he had not understood when he thought about horse riding to begin with. Henry took the Halter and did as he was told to call the horse. "Come on Amber Come on, come here," Henry said softly before looking up at his grampa hoping he liked the name of the horse, he had named him age's ago but had never told him. The horse soon came to him, he stoked her head gently. He started putting the halter on Amber making sure to follow his grampa's every words, and he grinned when his grampa approved of it.
"Oh," Henry said slightly disappointed he wasn't going to get to, lead the horse out, his grampa was going to do it. "Okay then grampa and I'll watch you and learn how to do it," He replied with restraint understanding that he had to learn and to do that, he needed to watch his grampa do it and not complain. He made sure to watch him carefully, making sure to remember every move and not miss a thing, it was after all extremely important. "Yes I see," Henry said nodding and moving closer to look at them. "Okay, do it slow first got it grampa," Henry answered back a big smile on his face as he continued to learn from his grampa. He was enjoying this and not only that the excitement was building. He watched as he put the saddle on and giggled again as he mentioned his family member's getting angry if he got hurt. He imagined them running after his grampa, shooting arrows, magic and guns at him, it was a funny picture, but one he hoped to avoid, he didn't want them to hurt his grampa because he had done something wrong. "I promise grampa there will be no angry women after you," he told him before watching how the saddle was put on quietly.
The Next thing was Henry helped his grampa put the bridle on, and he quickly gave Amber another stroke to keep her calm. His grampa showed him how right it should be and how to space it. The next bit Henry made a slight face, he wanted to jump straight on, in fact he had been wanting to since he started, it seemed cooler that way. He understood though well sort of. he was soon enough given the reins which caused Henry's eyes to widen and lighten up in excitement, the boy started feeling rather giddy now. He was finally going to be able to do it and the excitement just built and built, this was it, he was going to actually get to ride a horse, him Henry. He never thought he would ever get to do it, but he was he really, really was. Henry nearly almost missed what his grampa was saying in his excitement.
He made sure this time to listen to every word like his life depended on it, which when thinking about it, his life might actually do so. He held the reins then used his left hand to take the horses sadle horn. It was a good thing the horse was around his size otherwise it would of been harder for him. He made sure not to feel nervous as he knew that would not do Amber any favours, as he put his left foot in the stirrup, and then came the best part, the part Henry had really, really wanted to do. He swung his leg over and was now sat on the horse. "Ive done it!" Henry exclaimed excited "I really did Grampa look, I'm on the horse," He had never done this before, and now he had, he couldn't believe it, this was the best day ever! He puffed out his chest, which possibly looked rather silly given his age, and gave his grampa a big prideful smile to match Charming's."This is soooooo cool." Henry added.
Strangely Henry found one of the coolest things about this was that he was now at his grampa's level. While on the horse Henry felt the urge to just try ride off, but he knew he shouldn't he had to get this right and listen to his grampa. He had to show him that he was ready, that he was to be trusted, that he respected both Amber and his grampa.
He did what his grampa said with the reins then nodded, "yes Gramp's I'm ready, I really am," He said with a big wide grin. He was he was ready he could not wait, he felt his heart thumping but he had to ignore that. He had to concentrate on what he was doing, he had concentrate on what the horse was doing and where he was going. As well as keeping his balance. He could do this he knew he believed he could. His Grampa would stay close though so he didn't need to worry too much. He once again did as he was told squeezing his calves on the horses side, before trying out his commands. "Giddap," Henry said his eyes widening once more as the horse went forwards and they started riding around. "Giddap Amber" Henry said again going a little faster, he kept a little quiet after that, but the the exhilaration from this was clear on the boys face, it was obvious how much he was enjoying this. As they went round he didn't even fall once, he kept his balance but then they were not going that fast. Part of him really wanted to see what it was like at speed, part of him just wanted to go. "Giddap" Henry said again as his grampa stepped further away, and made sure to turn Amber as they got close the edge. "Thanks Grampa, thank you this is awesome!"
Henry's grinned widen as he was asked how he was felling "Like I can do anything grampa," Henry replied before adding, "I feel like a Knight." Just without a sword but he was getting there, he ended up going slightly faster possibly a bit faster than his Grampa would like but he was loving it now, and he didn't really want to stop.

Charming smirked, "Yes Henry, you patience is a virtue that it important, especially at this stage of riding a horse. If you are patience with the horse, then hopefully it'll be patient with you." He explained and continued showing Henry the horse ropes. As Henry called the horse David nodded with a smile and looked at Henry, "When I was growing up, I had a horse named Ember. I named her that because of the colour of her coat." He said to Henry. Ember had been his first horse after he turned 16. His mother had bought it at the farm over from theirs to replace the one that had died the winter before. He loved that horse.
As Charming lead the horse he looked at Henry, "You'll lead it out next time ok? Remember I'm having to face two mums and a gran, all of whom could kick my butt if something happened to you." He laughed realising that in fact Charming was grossly out numbered, but he did have Neal for the guy side. Nah, in fact the women could still take him and Neal. He'd seen each of their love of the boy he was teaching currently. As he was promised by Henry that no angry women would be after him. "Good to know Henry." He smiled and started to repeat a process to show it to Henry again so he knew what he was doing. Henry was generally a fast learner anyway, so Charming knew next time there would only be a few questions from Henry, even if it was just to check he'd completed the stage right.
As Henry got on the horse David felt a swell of pride build up. He had always wanted to teach a kid like he'd been teaching Henry. He knew that his chance with Emma had gone, well as a child with her anyway. He looked at Henry as the excited boy looked so pleased with himself. "Ok. That's great Henry, now remember calm down a little." He laughed and stroked Amber to came it down in case it got jumpy. "You are really doing well Henry." He smiled and watched the boy. David was very fond of his grandson, he was a good boy who was so into the family. He reminded David a lot of himself at that age. He remembered his dad showing him how to ride, that was an experience, Charming laughed in spite of it, it was like a comedy sketch with the horse trying to run away and David not being quite big enough to get on the horse easily.
As Henry sped the horse up, Charming kept a close eye on the boy and horse. At a moment's notice, Charming was aware that the horse could get spooked and bolt. Luckily though Charming's horse was out and saddled, so he could catch up the little horse and the little boy. Well he wasn't little, but little compared to Charming on his horse. "Now careful not to go too fast Henry. Soon we'll have you mom and Snow out to see you." He told him with a laughed and watched him and his happy trotting companion. He laughed as Henry said he felt like a knight. "You're mom will be so glad." David laughed thinking of Emma's face if Henry turned up in full armour and with a sword. He looked to Henry, "You look like a Prince in training." He smiled.
Charming pull the lead rope closer, "Ok if you start to slow your horse down Henry, we'll let it rest and I'll get my horse and we can go a free wander if you want. You are doing very well after all." He said. Usually Charming wouldn't go riding without Henry having had more than one lesson, but the boy had controlled the horse very well and they were still in the stable grounds even if it was a 'free' wander. It wasn't like they were riding in the woods or in town. As the horse came over to Charming, he fed it a treat and then went over to his horse. The horse Henry was riding was a foal from Charming's horse's mate. Snow in fact rode the mother. Charming stroked his horse's neck as he, in a slightly larger singular moment than henry's, got onto the horse and pulled the reins towards Henry and his horse. "Ok now I'll still have a lead to your horse, but you remember you are in control. If at any point you need to stop just say. Remember it's not you failing if you need to stop. It can be overwhelming for you AND the horse." He told his grandson and smiled reassuringly to the boy. "Let's go!" He said and pulled his horse's reins again and lightly moved so the horse took his command as he mad a click noise with his mouth to let the horse to move forward.
