(BEFORE CURSE) Arabella was the only child born to poor peasant farmers, Gregory and Cassandra. They had been trying to have children for some time, so when Arabella was born, they were filled with joy at the arrival of their beautiful baby girl. Unfortunately, they would not get to raise their daughter, though of course they didn't know this then. A few short months after Arabella was born, the King of their land came to them. He told them that he had unknowingly agreed to give up his baby in a year's time in return for help when he had been very lost. But, because he didn't want the evil man to take the prince, that instead he was going to leave his own son, Noah, with them, and take Arabella to give to the man as payment. Of course Gregory didn't want to give their daughter up, it very nearly killed them, but they agreed knowing that they would be helping to protect the heir to the throne, and with the hope deep in their hearts that they would someday find their daughter again.
Arabella was kept at the king's castle, and cared for very well, for the next year. But when the year was up, and the man came to claim his payment, the king handed her over without thought. He took her far away to his estate, where she was raised not only a prisoner, but raised to be a servant. The man himself was very cold and cruel, ordering her about to his every whim even when she was just a small child, and if she didn't do what she was asked well enough or quickly enough, she was often punished, either by being whipped or locked away without food or water for a day or more. She quickly learned to do as she was told and to do it well, and to stay out of the man's way as much as she possibly could.
Her only friends, the only ones who showed her any kindness on the cruel man's estate, were his kindly cook, and her daughter. But they didn't live on the estate, and Arabella spent much, if not most, of her time alone. Her favorite thing to do, when she didn't have a long list of chores to do, was to explore the large castle that the man lived in. One day, when the man wasn't home, Ara snuck into his study out of curiosity. While she was in there, she found a book about magic, and becoming intrigued, she snuck the book out with her. After that day, Ara secretly began to teach herself magic, with the help of that book and others she found on further adventures sneaking into the forbidden study. On one day, she overheard her captor talking to himself, and found out that she had been payment from a king, she was a princess. From that day, she became determined to find a way to escape.
One day, when Ara was fully grown, an adult now, after her captor had been away for a number of days, he brought a man home with him. He had told the man he would give him a job, but Ara knew the evil man too well, and she vowed to herself that she would help this innocent man escape from this castle, even if she couldn't. That night the evil man ate ravenously and told Arabella to give the man the scraps. He told the man he could rest two days, and on the third he would put him to work, and forbade him to speak. Arabella was then told to show the man to where his room would be, which she did without question.
The next day she watched as the man explored the estate, including the stable where a black cow, a white faced calf, and a white horse were kept, along with some other animals. She found that she enjoyed watching him, this was the first time her captor had ever brought anyone home, and she was curious about him. Where had he come from? Why on earth had he come here and trusted the evil man? In the end none of that mattered, either way, she was determined to make sure that he got away with his life.
The third day, her captor set the man to scythe enough grass for the horse and clean its stall. Ara told him, in whispers, to make a strong plait of the rushes and a peg, and threaten to bind its mouth and peg it so it could not eat or scatter its food. He obeyed, and the horse stopped eating and did not foul its stall. Then her captor set him to milk the cow. Ara told him to heat a pair of tongs and threaten to use them if the cow did not give all her milk to him. The man obeyed, and the old man was unable to get any more milk from the cow. Then her captor set him to bring in a hay rick. Ara told him to tie the horse to the rick and count. He did so, and when the horse asked why, he said he was counting packs of wolves in the forest. The horse hauled the entire rick of hay back hastily, when it heard what the man said.
Then her captor set him to bring a white-faced calf to the pasture, but Ara advised him to tie himself to the calf with a silk thread to ensure it could not escape from him. Then her said he had no more work, but the man must come to his bed and offer him his hand when he woke. Ara told him that the old man meant to eat him, but the man must offer him a red-hot shovel instead of his own hand. The man obeyed, and her captor refused to shake it.
Then her captor said he would marry the man and Arabella, and Ara said he had found her out. The man cut off the calf's head at her direction and brought her a red ball from it. She brought a tiny ball of shining light and they fled. She told him that she had overheard that she was a king's daughter.
In the morning, her captor at first thought they were not eager to marry, but then he searched for them and realized they had fled. He sent a group of goblins from one stall in his barn after them. The ball moved in Ara's hands, and she had it change her into a brook and the man into a fish. The goblins returned to her captor and said there had been nothing but a brook with a fish.
Her captor went to the next stall and sent the goblins there after them, instructing them to drink the brook and catch the fish. Ara turned herself into a rose tree and the man into a rose. The goblins returned and said there had been nothing but a rose tree with one lone rose. Her captor went to the next stall and sent his mightiest goblins after them, to tear up the rose tree. The man and Ara were resting in the woods, and Arabella turned herself into a breeze and the man into a midge. Then, when the goblins were gone, she said that her captor would know them even if they transmuted into any form; she rolled the ball and it led them to the door.
After they had escaped, Arabella thought it would be better if they went their separate ways, both going to find their own ways home, but the man refused. He told her everything, about how he was the prince and how the king had traded him for her so that he wouldn't have to give his own son to the evil man. He said that he had intentionally gone with her captor in hopes of rescuing her. He insisted that she return to their kingdom with him, and Arabella agreed, she found that in their time together, she had fallen in love with him, and she didn't want to leave him. When they returned to their kingdom, Noah, the prince, took his rightful place as king, and made her his queen.
Their wedding was perfect, and went on without any issues, except for one thing. Noah's uncle, King Midas had arrived, hoping to take over their kingdom, and had been upset to find that Aurelia's rightful heir had returned. Noah's cousin Abigail did not want the same things as her father, she had never agreed with his greed. She told her father that she was going to stay on in Aurelia to try and convince Noah to give up the throne, but instead she introduced Noah and Ara to her husband Sir Frederick. The 4 of them began making plans at this point to eventually attempt to overthrow King Midas. During this time Noah and Arabella had a child, a daughter named Daphne, and for the most part Arabella was happy for the first time in her life. Noah had her birth parents, Gregory and Cassandra move into the castle with them so she could get to know them. And Ara had her friends the cook and her daughter come stay with them as well, giving them jobs in the castle kitchen. Their life and their plans were going well until Regina's curse hit and tore them all apart.
(DURING CURSE) In Storybrooke, during the curse, Arabella's name was Ava Ross, and she had no memory of her family or friends. Ava was the oldest of 2 daughters to a single mother who worked as a teacher. Ava and her sister were both students at Storybrooke University, Ava majoring in psychology and her sister in fashion.
(AFTER CURSE) When the curse broke, Arabella realized that she had no idea where her husband or daughter were and she was distraught. She was slightly comforted to find that the people she'd spent 28 years thinking were her mother and sister were actually her friends the cook and her daughter. Thankfully she found Noah that day, to her relief, but unfortunately, Daphne was still missing and would take longer to find, which made Arabella pretty much a wreck, the complete opposite of her normal confident self.
