History:
(Character based off of The White Snake by the Grimm Brothers)
A LONG time ago there lived a king who was famed for his wisdom through all the land. Nothing was hidden from him, and it seemed as if news of the most secret things was brought to him through the air. But he had a strange custom; every day after dinner, when the table was cleared, and no one else was present, a trusty servant had to bring him one more dish. It was covered, however, and even the servant did not know what was in it, neither did anyone know, for the King never took off the cover to eat of it until he was quite alone.
Elke Dienerin was a very curious individual. Born a servant in the castle of the King, she grew up amongst the gossip and chatter that plagues the kitchens and other areas of the servants. Her mother was a cook and her father a horseleech. Growing up in the kitchens paved a future for her there as well. She worked her way up from a scullion to the dapifer, and eventually found the favor of the king who trusted her with the task of bringing his final dish.
This had gone on for a long time, when one day Elke was overcome with such curiosity that she could not help carrying the dish into her room. When she had carefully locked the door, he lifted up the cover, and saw a white snake lying on the dish. Unable to stop her curiosity she took a small bite. No sooner had it touched her tongue than she heard a strange whispering of little voices outside her window. Eating the snake had given her power of understanding the language of animals.
As coincidence would have it, the very same day the Queen lost her favorite ring and Elke was the suspect of the theft, considering her closeness to the King. The King threatened that if the real thief was not brought forward by the next day, Elke would be found guilty and therefore executed. Her pleas of innocence were in vain and she was dismissed.
In her trouble and fear she went down into the courtyard and began to this of a way to rid herself of this trouble. After overhearing some ducks at a nearby stream using her newfound ability, she learned that one of the ducks had swallowed the Queen’s ring in its haste of eating. Grabbing the duck, Elke took it to the kitchen and as it was being dressed, found the missing ring.
Now that she could prove her innocence, she returned to the King. In an attempt to amend his wrongful accusation the King allowed Elke to ask a favor, and promised her the best place in the court that she could wish for. She refused all of his offers, and only asked for a horse and some money for traveling, as she had a mind to see the world and go about a little. Along her travels, she encountered several different animals in need and each time, using her gift, she helped them and each offered their future help in turn.
On her journey she tumbled upon a city alive with commotion, curious about the cause she journeyed into the center. A man announced that the King’s daughter wished to be married and was looking for suitors to perform a task for her hand. The task however was difficult and those who did not succeed forfeited their life. Many had already attempted, but failed; nevertheless when Elke saw the King's daughter she was so overcome by her great beauty that she forgot all danger, went before the King, and declared herself a suitor.
The King was not only shocked, but was enraged at the former servant’s audacity. Not wanting to go against his word, the King decided to allow Elke to try for the princess’s hand. With the assistance of some of the animals she helped along her journey, she was able to complete the task. Astonished, the King agrees to the marriage of his daughter to the former servant.
When the princess learned that she was not her equal in birth, she scorned him, and required him first to perform another task. Once more, with help from the animals she saved, Elke was able to complete the task put forth by the princess. But changing the princess’s heart would not prove so easy. She required one more task to be completed in order for her hand; to be brought forth an apple from the Tree of Life.
One problem stood in the way of Elke completing her task: she did not know where the Tree of Life stood. She started her journey regardless. After travelling through three kingdoms with no leads as to where to Tree stood she was found by three fledgling crows that she had saved starvation while journeying the lands. They brought with them the Golden Apple that they had retrieved after flying over the sea to the end of the world where the Tree of Life stood. With the final task complete the former servant set off once more towards the Kingdom.
Before reaching the castle of the King, Elke was apprehended by the castle guards and the apple was taken. Although she had completed every task put forth by the King and his daughter, it did not change her low birth. She was warned not to return to the kingdom upon penalty of death. Dispirited by the fate, she left the kingdom to live out her days as a forester within the depths of the Enchanted Forest.

Roleplay Example:
The sky was stained an orange that was slowly fading to a darker, nearly bloody red, the dusky kind of color that's most often seen just before the last sliver of sunlight falls behind the horizon. A slight breeze ruffled her chocolate locks as well as the nearby bushes. She turned her head towards the sound, unsure of the origin at first. Only being met with the sight of stained brown leaves holding desperately on to the skeletal branches which had lost most of its bushiness from the frost that had swept through the area a few nights before. Sighing she leaned back against the bench eyes watching the last of the sun sneaking below the horizon.
The she pushed up her jacket sleeve to check her watch and, upon seeing that it was nearly seven, and the accompanying growl that sounded from her stomach, she decided that food was in order, all the while the coming storm making its presence known in the distant sky.
__________
When the rain came, it was not due to subservient melancholy generated by any given number of histrionic manic-depressives the world over. Rain is more science than psychology, caused by moisture trapped in the atmosphere, gathering in clouds until the density becomes too great or too heavy or too something, and then all at once, the heavens open up and they cry until the pressure hiccups to a halt, and the drizzle meanders down to earth half-heartedly, without purpose or pretense. But sometimes when it came it was like a great battle between wind and water .The aqua waves coming up from their home on land to the foreign territory of the sky.
The rain was pouring like nothing else. Its drops falling in sheets that felt of ice. Long and hard they fell, the storm having gone on for hours, with no end in sight. The howling wind brought no comfort, Lighting flashed always followed close behind by it's partner. Booming in the crisp, wet air. Startling as a rumble before growing in a snarling beast .It was so interesting -- the rain. So full of emotion. So sad, yet happy, with hints of anger and frustration hidden in its depths.
A flash of lighting flew through the sky, illuminating the grounds over which the storm ruled. The sudden burst of light revealed a young woman. Her rain-soaked hair was plastered against her forehead, eyes cast downward in an attempt to keep the water from her hazel eyes.
Ellie padded solemnly over the sidewalk of the streets that had been her home for tas long as she could remember. The hood of her jacket was pulled over her head in an attempt to close out not only the ear splitting thunder, but the rain as well. A small sigh escaped her lips as hazel hues glanced up at the dark cloud filled skies. "Another wonderful day."
Shaking a few drops of water off of her head she sped up her pace, her destination coming closer into view. Granny’s Diner. A soft smile tweaked her lips, the place never failed to feel homey and make her feel a little bit better about the loneliness that she felt in this place. A few small looks were aimed her way as she moved towards the back corner that she usually occupied when she came. Finding it empty she shed her soaked coat and sat down, a small sigh escaping her mouth as she sagged into the seat.
