Avery stretched, and threw a few punches at the air in front of him. He was ready to teach his friend Henry a thing or two about defending himself. Henry wasn't exactly the athletic type, and he was afraid his friend wouldn't be able to protect himself if he wasn't around. Besides growing up in his family, it was guaranteed you'd have muscles by the time you were five. Though Avery was thin, he was lean and had an incredible metabolism that allowed him to eat like a pig.
He had chosen a park between his house and Henry's apartment to meet. This way they were less likely to run into anyone they knew. He didn't want his best friend to feel uncomfortable, it was going to be embarrassing enough without anyone watching. He chuckled at the thought of the next few hours, promising himself to go a little easier since Henry wasn't used to fighting. After warming up, Avery plopped on the grass and looked up at the cloudless sky. Henry was lucky, he never got up before noon on Saturday.
A sound broke Avery of his train of thought, and soon he realized it was his cell phone. A few days earlier he had set the alarm, to remind himself to be on time. "Man, I'm good". Not only was he on time, he showed up before Henry. "Note to self- give Henry a good punch in the nuts for being late." Laughing to himself, he closed his eyes and hummed a tune.

"fighting?" ------------------- Just Henry Swan ------------------- Henry knew for one thing that today he was going to be getting bruises all over, he knew he was going to be in for a bit of a tough day today, he juts hoped by the end of it his mom didn't get too mad about it. He would have to hide any bruises he got, though his mom was quite perceptive about these things. He did care about what his mom thought, but Henry did need to know how to fight and defend himself. Henry decided that his best friend Avery was the best person to learn this off, he was a lot more athletic than Henry and could kick his ass just as easy.
Henry was worried that his mom was going to kill him if she found out about this, but Henry wad determined to do it, yes he was a good boy but that didn't mean he did not need to learn how to fight right? Either way he was determined to do this, he could defend himself a little but if ever something happened at school, well Avery had to be the one to protect him. He liked his best friend but it was a little embarrassing having him have to come to the rescue all the time.
Henry had been trying for a while now to get one up on his friend, to see if he could surprise him or beat him while rough housing or just a little fun, he couldn't really. Henry just wanted to prove he could at least best his friend at least once. He always lost when it came to something like that though, Avery was always better at it. So Henry had also been asking his best friend to teach him for a while as well, show him how to fight, how to defend himself. Part of him felt like he should know but that was odd because he never had someone teach him before.
Today was going to be rather embarrassing, so Henry was glad that Avery had found a Park where no one who knew them went . Henry didn't want his school friends to know how much he sucked at fighting, he'd be teased non stop for it.
Henry was late, mainly because he had to finish his chores for his mom, and he had been a little later getting up than usual. He just hoped Avery wouldn't get annoyed about that. As soon as he knew he was finished he got his coat and his scarf and ran out of the apartment as soon as possible, telling his mom he had somewhere to be with Avery.
"Sorry I'm late," Henry called finally turning up and running over to where he saw Avery was laying down on the grass. "I had to do my chores," he was sure if he didn't he would of been grounded and not allowed to see Avery at all. He walked closer to Avery and sat down next to him.

There was no way this kid could sneak up on him. Even with his eyes closed he knew Henry was coming. Avery smirked slightly, his signature look. As his friend lowered himself to sit down, he quickly turned, swinging his arm towards Henry. 'Better start this thing right' Avery chuckled internally. His fist stopped right before Henry's, well let's put it nicely, junk.
Avery grinned wide and used his upper body strength to jump up without needing to push himself up. "Hey creep, bout time you got here" He listened to Henry's apology, and quickly went back and forth from giving his friend a hard time to letting it go. "I forgive you," He nodded with a stern look on his face. "This time." With a quick jab to Henry's chest with his pointer finger, he straightened his shoulders and stood as tall as he could. At the age of 12 (well almost 12, at least in his mind) Avery already stood above most of the other kids in his class. His father was 6'5" and his mother was 5'10". You can't argue with those kind of genes.
In a instant he relaxed his body, giving his best friend a goofy look. "You wake up late or what?" Avery figured Henry had been doing chores, that always seemed to be the case on Saturdays. Man did kids ever get a break? School and homework all week, and chores on the weekend. Seriously uncool.

"fighting?" ------------------- Just Henry Swan ------------------- Henry was not ready for it straight away though he knew from the smirk that his friend knew he was here, he had never been able to sneak up on him either. Out of the two Avery was sneakier, Henry could be sneaky if he wanted to be but Avery, well Avery Henry had found you could never see coming. Henry had snuck up on a few people, however Avery he could never sneak up on even if he tried, though it was always fun to give it a go it just never worked.
Henry should of been ready for something right away but he froze up as Avery's fist came right for his junk, and stopped before hitting. He wouldn't of been able to do anything anyway, because by the time he noticed it was too late, and he would of been rolling around in agony. He sighed out in relief and huffed when he realized that Avery wasn't actually going to do it. Henry went a little red, "oh god I thought you were gonna do it, I fell for that one." Henry groaned again and lay down on the grass for a moment as Avery jumped up, he was embarrassed at how easily Avery could of got him.
For effect Henry pretended to look frightened and shrunk back as Avery gave him a stern look and poked his chest. "Yes boss I'll be here right on time next time sir," Henry said with a quick mock salute, before straightening himself and looking around. At the moment there wasn't anyone else around which was good, it meant any humiliation would be just between them. Henry stood up properly now and looked at his friend who had grown a little bit more recently.
Henry rubbed the back of his head returning Avery's goofy look with hiss own kind before chuckling a bit, "yeah I did a bit, the chores took most of my time, I can't believe I have to do them on a weekend as well." He sighed and grinned at Avery. "So you ready to teach me?" Henry asked actually excited for it.

As soon as Henry got up, Avery knew he would definitely have to start this lesson off slow. He didn't want his friend to get hurt right away, and he certainly didn't want Henry's mom calling his complaining about bruises. "Let's do it!" He trust a fist up into the air and stared off into space, as if in deep thought. Quickly, he turned to his friend.
"First, and most important, we have to work on your re-action time because frankly... well how do I put it nicely? You suck. But no worries, Master Avery is here." Chuckling, he clasped his hands together and bowed a bit forward, as a karate master may do. "Buttttt in all seriousness it's probably a good place to start. And you better get good at it quick because I can't have people say I'm abusing my best friend, now can I?"
Avery twisted his body sideways, so Henry could see what he was doing. "The first step is standing your ground." He planted his feet firmly on the ground, slightly spreading them out for better balance. "If you stand your ground it harder for someone else to get the best of you. Now you try." He pointed to a spot a few feet away.

"fighting?" ------------------- Just Henry Swan ------------------- “Yeah let’s,” Henry repeated his best friend watching carefully, just in case he was going to try and trick him or something, Avery was good with ticking people and Henry still got caught off guard even now, though he was determined not to be this time around, even more so considering Avery was teaching him how to fight. He wondered as well at what they would start with, something easy or something hard, he wasn’t sure and he was interested to find out.
“My reaction time?” Henry asked frowning a bit, he thought he had good reactions times, then again considering Avery’s almost punch a moment ago, it kinda proved how bad his reaction times could be. “I’m not that bad am I mate?” Henry question rather slightly put out by being told he sucked, he felt like he should defend himself a bit, but even he had to agree in the end. “Yeah I do don’t I.” Henry raised an eyebrow as Avery called himself a master, and chuckled a bit in response, “and i’m your eager student, here to learn master,” Henry chuckled out quickly repeating Avery’s bow. “I’ll try my best then, don’t want people chasing you because of it,” he grinned in response. While Avery was his best friend and the one he would hang out with at all times, there were a few other class friends who he knew would love nothing than to blame Avery for stuff. Something that annoyed Henry quite a bit.
Henry nodded as Avery mentioned the first step being having to stand his ground, and watched as Avery planted his feet on the ground, he made sure look carefully to see how his friend was doing it, he smiled nervously wait for his go try. Henry nodded again as he told him it was his turn to try now. “Okay think I got it,” he said as he ran over the spot that Avery had pointed out and began to do the same thing that he had done. Henry planted his feet on the spot though not all that firmly, and he ended up feeling slightly off balance as well. Henry had no idea if he had actually done it right, but he was sure he would soon find out with Avery’s response. Though it was already a rather fun experience, though he was sure to think differently when the pain and Embarrassment started.

Avery nodded eagerly, watching his friend closely. He gave him approving nods, disappointed looks and put his eyebrow up in confusion. Of course, he was kidding around, it seemed as if Henry got the stance right off, but he wasn't going to let him get off that easily.
"Not badddd." By dragging out his words he tried to give Henry the idea that it wasn't good either. "I can work with it though," Avery continued to pretend. "Now...." He started to circle his friend, not saying a word for over a minute. He knew this would make Henry nervous, if there was one thing Avery was not; it was quiet. Ever. Many times as a child, other kids at school would pay him to not talk. As he got older, he didn't talk to those kids anyway, at least not anything nice.
"Now....." Stroking his chin, he stuck out his leg and pushed the back of one of Henry's legs. It didn't budge. "Ok ok." This time he pushed harder. His intention was to make sure Henry was focusing on keeping his feet planted and not toppling over. Avery didn't want to knock him down, not yet. If he was feeling cheeky he could have kicked Henry's leg, but that would be mean. Sure he played around, but he didn't want his best and only friend to think of him as a real jerk. Besides, he liked Henry and wanted to be nice. "You want to focus Henry, on your feet. For now at least. Try imagining they are glued to the ground."

"fighting?" ------------------- Just Henry Swan ------------------- Okay so part of Henry realized that Avery was trying to make him nervous, he wasn't entirely rubbish, but that didn't stop him from getting nervous and just about everything his friend did or criticized slightly. It just made him nervous, even more so considering Avery was the one teaching him, so he should know when something's good or not. It was a little hard for Henry at this moment to recognise if he was trying to mess with him or not. Part of him knew that perceptive part of him was ringing the bells, while the other part, that was trying to concentrate was nervous which was most likely what Avery was trying to do.
Henry did try to ignore the not bad that was stretched out for a few seconds he didn't fall for it, but as Avery began to circle him he did, what really got Henry the most though was the silence, the utter and most people [but not Henry] would put it terrifying silence. Silence you could say was unnatural when it came to Avery, his best friend was not one for silence at all. He followed his movements with his eyes though it made him a little dizzy. He was getting more nervous as well the more silent it was, this wasn't like Avery. Was he going to try some move out on him out of nowhere, many questions run through his head.
It had prepared him a little for the first push on his leg, but it didn't stop him from being nervous, was Avery trying to see if he would topple over? Henry wasn't sure but he was finding it rather hard to focus, he was more nervous than anything plus he was more focused on what Avery might do next. "Focus on my feet?" Henry questioned more to himself, so he had to try make it seem like they were stuck to the floor, well okay he could try that. That was useful advice and he tried to imagine them as that, but once again he found his mind wondering being nervous and wondering what Avery was going to do.

Avery watched as Henry tried his hardest to concentrate. He could sense his friend’s nervousness, was he being too critical? He shook his head a bit, shaking out that thought. He was confident in his ability to stand up for himself, and was determined to make sure Henry was too. “Loosen up a bit man!” A bright smile flashed on his face. “We are also supposed to be having fun too, ya know?” Tilting his head, he took his hands off his hips and shook Henry’s shoulders a bit, trying to get him out of the nervous state of mind.
“The key to fighting is being able to do a lot of things at once, like focusing on keeping your feet on the ground while still being able to anticipate what is coming.” Ever since Avery was young, his father made sure to teach him the importance of fighting. Now Avery may have taken it too far, trying to get into fights over everything. He could hear Michael the 2nd’s voice in his head now, ‘I’m not teaching you to fight so you can beat people up son, I’m teaching you to defend yourself if the time comes’. What a goody good his dad was.
“We don’t have to go over a ton today, just some basics so you can practice.” He tried to sound reassuring. It was probably a good idea to make sure Henry knew that Avery wasn’t going to start throwing punches right off, and expect him to know what to do. Considering Avery’s usual tactics, he was actually being really nice right now. He realized this must mean that he cared a good deal about his friend Henry, which was rare. Maybe he was getting soft in his old age. “After this you want to get some food by the way. All this hardcore training is gonna leave me starvvvinnnngggg. Jokingly, he put a hand on his stomach and bent forward slightly, laying on the dramatics as usual.
