Bae's life in the Enchanted Forest was a life he loved, he may not have had much in his life, but he did have one thing that he wouldn't trade for anything. His father Rumpelstiltskin, although most people thought he was a coward, Baelfire didn't care, his father was his whole world. Baelfire was heading back to the shack where the two of them lived after wandering around the Enchanted Forest. Bae entered the shack and sat down at the table, looking forward to seeing his dad. Ever since he lost his mother due to the pirates, his father was all he had. Bae stared at the door excitedly knowing that his father would be home soon. Mr. GoldRumpelstiltskin

Life was tough since the day Milah had walked out on both he and Baelfire, leaving him to carry the day to day responsibilities of his job at selling wool and doing house hold chores that included cooking and cleaning. He knew some day Baelfire would find out the truth and there was many times that he so desperately wanted to tell him but what would his young son think about him if he knew his mother had left Rumpel because of his actions on the battlefield. Having the ability to constantly look his son in the eyes also proved to be a difficult task ever since the lie he had told him about his mother being dead. How could a father explain to his son that the man whom his mother had left him for intmidated him. Oh how intimidating Hook was indeed, a pirate who had seen battle his entire life challenging a man who's only strength was the ability to create threads from sheeps wool. Hook had even allowed Rumpel the chance to fight with a sword that he had placed at the feet of the frightened man but he could not bring himself to pick it up as the thoughts of dying and leaving Baelfire both fatherless and motherless scared him immensely. How could he ever explain such to a boy that looked up to him as a hero? Slowly Rumpel opened the door to the shack both he and Baelfire shared, a deep sigh passed through his lips. He removed the large satchel of thread that he had been carrying on his back and tossed it to the floor by the door. The first image that came into sight as he entered the room was his son, again he sighed and walked over to where his son was with the assistance of a large wooden stick that he used to help him get from one place to another. "I'm so sorry Baelfire, I tried to sell some wool today but no one is buying. I tried, I really tried. I wanted us to have that big supper that I promised you but I wasn't able to make any money" His heart always shattered each time he had to deliver terrible news to Baelfire as he knew, no matter how positive that his son tried to act, he could tell there was disappointment there everytime. "Not all is lost though, I did see some rabbits out in the forest on my way home, perhaps you and I can go kill a couple for supper tonight?" Rumpel asked with a smile, hoping he could bring some happiness back to this dreadful and failed evening that he had endured out in town. Baelfire/Neal Cassidy

A smile formed on Bae's lips as his father got home, he stood up and went to hug him. "It's ok dad." Bae knew that his dad hated coming home with bad news, but, he didn't mind. He had a feeling that business would pick up sometime, and until then it's not like they had nothing.
Bae continued to hug his father, as he asked about the rabbits. He didn't approve of killing creatures, but, he could tell that his father was desperate to have something to show for the day of work he did. Bae looked at his father with his usual adoration and smiled, "You know what dad." Bae paused and looked at his father again Bae wanted to allow his father his chance to feel pride. "It sounds like a plan".

Rumpel smiled, proud of his son’s show of optimism in such a bad time for the two with no money or means of the weaver to supply food to his growing boy. It was tough knowing that they had captured and eaten rabbit two nights in a row because of peoples inability or lack of interest to purchase threads from his inventory. “Let’s see if we cant find the fattest rabbit what do you say?” Rumpel said, trying to sound excited to hide his true shame for failing his boy.
He grabbed a bow and a carrying sack that had only a few of rather old arrows and placed both the sack and bow over his shoulder. Rumpel gave his son a pat on the back then walked toward the door and opened it up, he thought for a moment then removed the bow and arrow sack from around his shoulder and held it out to his son. “I want you to shoot your first rabbit that way when we eat it, it’ll mean so much more to me knowing it was killed by you.” This was the first time Rumpel had ever thought to trust his son with such a dangerous weapon but Baelfire was around the age that it would be wrong not to give him a chance to kill his first animal and after all, their father/son time they were about to spend together meant so much to the man with nothing more to his name than an old shack and the clothing on his back.

Bae smiled and jumped up and down excitedly "Sounds great papa" Bae said, looking at his dad. Bae could tell that his father was disappointed in failing to sell anything, but, Bae knew that he already had everything he could need. His father and a place to live, what else could he need?
Bae watched as his father handed him the bow and arrow, he'd watched his father do this alot, but, wasn't sure he had the heart to do it himself. Bae wasn't going to let this in, as his father really wanted him to do this. "It would be an honour to kill a rabbit for our dinner." Bae still wasn't sure he wanted to, but, he didn't want to disappoint his father. Bae took another look at the bow and arrow before hugging his father again.

Baelfire, killing his first animal and Rumpel there to witness the event was a thought that meant so much to the man whom had grown accustomed to the life of a single parent despite their current financial situation or lack there of. He wanted to waste little time venturing out into the forest to search for the rabbits before they were hunted out or gone back into hiding. Rumpel pulled on a chain that was attached to the barely pieced together wooden door and opened it. He positioned his hand on the upper part of Baelfire’s back and looked down at him with a smile across his lips.
“Do you realize I was just about your age when I shot my first bow, son? Now sure mine was not as well constructed as this one. My arrow was simply a stick with a point carved at the end but it did the trick.” He stepped outside of the broken down shack that they lived in but stopped just beyond the thresh hold and pulled the door closed. “I hope that some day when you have a child of your own you can share in moments like these with him if it’s a boy.” These were moments that Rumpelstiltskin knew he would cherish and if Baelfire did one day have a son of his own he would be able to experience the same Joy that Rumpel was feeling; Their first father/son hunt with Bae as the one doing the hunting this time.
Rumpel walked with his son toward the forest to search for what would be their dinner later that night but just before he could reach the edge of the forest’s entrance he was approached by several Knights on horse back, all of whom formed a circle around the two with their swords drawn from their sheaths. Rumpel, frightened by their appearance brought his son into a tight protective embrace and lowered his head down to bring his chin at rest ontop of Baelfire’s head.
“You there!” Called out one of the Knights. “Where do you think you’re going?” He questioned and stepped off the saddle of the horse he had been riding.
“Well, I-I was just going out into the woods with my boy here to find food for supper, it’s my son’s first hunt.” Rumpel replied, though intimidated by just the sheer presence of the man he managed to force a smile of kindness in order to prevent any sign if disrespect from being shown.
The man circled around the two for a moment, observing their presence alone, he could tell the fear that Rumpelstiltskin had displayed infront of him. He kicked the walking stick out from beneath Rumpel which caused him to stumble and fall toward the ground onto his hands and knees, an action that had the other Knights laughing at his humiliation. The Man placed the tip of his blade beneath Baelfire’s chin and gazed within his eyes, his lips curled into a smirk.
“You know child, a boy old enough to hunt Is a boy old enough to fight in the Ogres war. How old are you?” The man demanded which lead to the frightened weaver to crawl over to the Knight’s feet.
“He-He’s not old enough! Please sir, I’m begging of you. We do not want any trouble. Let us be on our way, all we want to do is find food to eat.” How humiliated he was, on his knees right infront of his son, pleading with a man obviously stronger than he, fearful of what may happen if he took Baelfire away from him and forced him to battle in a war many thought was not suited for children to be apart of. The Knight could easily take Bae, he had the back up and who was Rumpel? A weakened crippled man with only a walking stick as his defense and there he was, begging right infront of his son’s very eyes. What would Bae think of his father now? Seeing first hand at how cowardly his father was, how he was not able to protect him against a group of bullies.
“I’ll tell you what, give me the bow and arrow the boy holds and we’ll let you two be on your way” The Knight held out his hand and Rumpel without thinking quickly climbed to his feet with the use of his walking stick and nervously took the bow and arrows from around Baelfire’s shoulder and handed them with shaky hands to the Knight. The Knight took the weapon and climbed back on his horse and rode off with the others, laughing the entire way. Rumpel pulled his son close to him and kissed the top of his head as tears fell from his eyes.
“N-Not all is lost son. We can still hunt for food, It will just be a bit more challenging” He kept his head above Baelfire’s not wanting his son to see him cry. All seemed lost when it came to finding something for them to eat but at least he wanted to try and stay positive for the only sole reason he had to live. “Maybe we can carve out a sphere from a fallen tree branch, wouldn’t you like that?”
