Personality: Appearances can be deceiving as is the case for Killian. On the surface, he seems to be your typical pirate; a very dangerous man who is very conniving and selfish. Extremely confident and ruthless when the need for such a thing arises. The kind of man who would soon be stabbing you in the back once he had what he wanted from you. All of these things are true as the life of a pirate is fraught with danger and there are times when a man must do what he will in order to survive. But, there is another side to the man; a side that many rarely ever see.
Hidden beneath that harsh exterior beats a heart that cares; a heart that has loved and has lost, has felt pain and betrayal and is blinded by thoughts of revenge. Yet the heart still beats softly at times and in those quiet moments when it's not at a roar, you can see that other side of him in the warmth of a smile, the laughter in his eyes, or the gentle timbre of his voice. Killian is a very complex man who uses his charm to worm his way out of tough situations, to woo the ladies and to make deals at times with the devil himself. When it comes to loyalty, he gives it to his crew and he expects the same in trade. Those who prove disloyal on the Jolly Roger will find themselves walking the plank. This same fierce loyalty extends to very few off his ship and it began tentatively, but has grown over time.
He may be a swash-buckling thief, a charming ne'er-do-well, but beneath it all lies a hero just waiting for his chance to prove to the world that he's not such a bad guy.
History: Killian is much older than he looks and his history goes back farther than many would guess. There are few still alive that know the full story and Killian himself doesn’t share it often. The truth is that he did not always have the fearsome reputation he has today, but even before the events that would define his life for the next few hundred years, Killian was a pirate of some renown. He became captain to a pirate crew at a relatively young age and acquired a ship made of enchanted wood. Many adventures were had in Killian’s youth, and there are many stories that could be told, but one event in particular shaped his life and set him on a course for revenge that he would not stray from for centuries. That tale began, like many good stories do, with a woman.
Milah was her name. She was a beautiful brunette with a smile that could light up any room and a love of storytelling. Killian met her by chance in a small town tavern on one of his trips ashore. The two struck up a conversation and Milah’s opened up about her unhappiness in her life. Killian wanted to make her happy, at least for one evening. He told her stories of his adventures and of the lands he had seen. Milah drank it up and in turn told some of her own stories. The connection between them was strong and when Milah’s husband and young son showed up to bring her home, Killian’s regret upon seeing her go took him by surprise. How was it that he could care so much for a woman after only a few hours’ conversation? Fortunately for him, this was not the last he saw of Milah. Before he and his crew departed from that port of harbor, Milah came to him and expressed a strong desire to escape her small town life. Despite having only just met Killian, she asked if she could run away with him and join his crew. All too gladly, Killian accepted.
There was a snag in the plan: Milah’s family. Her husband, the town coward known as Rumpelstiltskin, came aboard his ship with the idea that Killian literally stole his wife away. Killian entertained the notion and attempted to goad the man into fighting for Milah; one final chance to prove himself to her. The offer was more than fair, but Rumpelstiltskin refused to fight and instead went home alone to break the news to his son. Killian and his crew sailed away and for years, life was good. Killian and Milah fell in love and went on many adventures in far off lands, exploring the world together. He could not have asked for more and they planned to live out the rest of their days together. Upon looking back, perhaps he should have known that it was too good to last. One trip to port some half a dozen years later changed everything.
Outside a tavern, Killian met a hooded figure who turned out to be the infamous Dark One. Such a meeting was unfortunate indeed but it was made far worse by the fact that this particular Dark One was none other than Rumpelstiltskin, Milah’s abandoned husband. He challenged Killian to another duel come the morning, to which Killian accepted, never informing him that Milah was still alive. They fought, and because of the Dark One’s magic, it was he that succeeded. Milah intervened before Rumpelstiltskin could crush Killian’s heart and they came to an agreement: a magic bean in exchange for their lives. The deal nearly went through before the Dark One changed his mind and crushed Milah’s heart before Killian’s eyes. He took Killian’s hand at the wrist, but that did not stop him from trying to bury a hook in the man’s chest. Unfortunately, given Rumpelstiltskin’s dark magic, this did nothing. Killian swore that he would find a way to kill the Dark One and, using the magic bean, sailed away to Neverland to formulate a plan. He remained in Neverland for centuries, trapped there by the demon boy called Pan, and during his time there he finally learned the way to end the Dark One’s miserable existence. Somewhere out there was a dagger capable of either controlling or killing Rumpelstiltskin and he would find it. He sailed back to his home realm and began his search.

Roleplay Example: Can be an old roleplay.
The sound of the wind whipping through sails should have brought joy to his heart. The feel of the wooden deck beneath his feet should have brought about elation. The waves caressing the hull and rocking her gently should have brought a smile to his face and he should have been there on the deck in revelry with the rest of his crew.
But this night found him standing on the port bow, resting his arms on the railing and looking out at the vast ocean and feeling anything but jovial. Even though he was pleased to have the Jolly Roger back; to have her fully repaired and setting sail once more, there wasn’t the same joy he had always felt before. No, where there was once joy, there was now melancholy. Where there was once that roguish smile, there was now only a small hint of sadness. Where once the man felt he had all the answers, there were now only questions and the more he asked them, the further into that depth of sadness he seemed to fall.
Why should he care what happened to them—to her? Why should the thought of leaving it all behind to return to the only life he’d ever known, the life he loved more than anything feel so guilty instead of relieved? All his life he’d looked after his crew and only relied on himself, yet there was a still, small voice nagging inside of his head telling him to turn back now, stop being such a selfish prick and prove not only to them, but to himself that he wasn’t the villain everyone made him out to be.
Killian let out a heavy sigh; his hand raising to run through the thick of black hair before pulling out his compass as if the answer lay within the letters and dial. He was at war with himself at the moment. On the one hand, there was the open sea and the adventure it could guarantee and no responsibility. No one to look after save himself and his crew. On the other hand, there were the people back in Storybrooke; those that he had reluctantly found himself caring about despite his efforts to remain aloof.
And there was her; Emma Swan. The woman had managed to get under his skin in a way that he hadn’t allowed any to achieve in quite some time. Was it love that drew him to her even if at the moment it was just in thought? Perhaps. Or perhaps it was again that wanting of something he could never have because it wasn’t his to hold. Whatever the case, it was enough to convince him that his present course wasn’t the one he should be taking. At least that was the reason he told himself there was for turning back.
With determination setting onto his face, Killian strode back towards the helm and taking the wheel in hand and began to turn the ship around. “It’s time for a different sort of adventure mates. The open sea will always be there and there will always be time to plunder and time to do what we do best. But now is not that time. Now is the time for us to be men, to stand and fight for what’s right. Time for us to do something that will be remembered and talked about for years to come.” There was this look in his eyes; one that balanced between determination and to some, it would appear to be madness. But whatever the case, there was a change coming over him; an irreversible change that would eventually change the course of his life in the same way he was changing the course of his ship.
”What are we going to do, Captain?” Smee asked with a trembling voice. With just a slight turn of his head, Hook’s eyes landed on Smee and an odd smile creased his lips, “We are going to save Storybrooke.”
