After Keening brought me back to life I thought that I would start living that Happily Ever After that everyone was always going on about, but no, of course that couldn't happen to me....how silly to think so.
For several blissful days Keening and I hid in the forest together, so wrapped up in our own passion that all Wonderland could have stopped existing around us and we would have never known. Then I woke up one morning to find the patch of grass beside me completely bare. My True Love was gone.
Of course I looked for him, but what was I supposed to do? Ask for help? Who was I going to ask? As far as I knew Alice had found her Genie and high tailed it out of Wonderland, and someone had come by and scooped the Knave up in his bottle to make him their personal lap dog. I was alone. Alone Alone. Of course this left me a little bent out of shape, so I had every right to seek out a descent drink at Caterpillar's place. It wasn't the worse choice I ever made and it won't be my last.
Caterpillar saw me in all of my "I hate love" glory, which is the perfect time to give me a suicide job. He told me that if I hunted down the Tweedles and brought them to him, that he would give me a ride to a place that would help me forget all of my grief. Of course I didn't believe him, but any chance to piss off the Tweedles was a good job to me. It was a piece of cake once I managed to sneak into the decrepit castle that once belonged to the Red Queen. I knew her reign would not last long. The Tweedles put up a little fight, but it wasn't enough for me. Taking them back to the Caterpillar was child's play and it wasn't like he was going to do anything to them that they weren't used to, I mean they had both had their heads cut off more then once, right?
The Caterpillar puffed out a few smoke rings from his Hookah as he eyed me with satisfaction. "I'm going to miss you Lizard Girl". Shrinking Mushrooms the Man...Thing....was serious! He blew a ring straight into my face and with that the ground beneath my feet began to rumble, then split, then....I was gone...
..........................................................................................................................................................................................
Lizard gasped as her knees hit down on a solid surface. It was pouring around her, soaking her instantly. Blinking, Lizard rose up and gaped at the strange road that she had been flung on. She stomped her foot down on it, but it didn't make a difference. It wasn't brick, but it also wasn't mud, what was this strange substance?
Wrapping her arms tightly around herself, Lizard faced one direction, then the other. Her eyes met a sign, 'Welcome to Storybrooke'. Storybrooke? There was no such place in Wonderland called Storybrooke, she was certain of that.
"I'll be damned, he really sent me away".
Shaking her head, she marched forward, set on finding this Storybrooke before she froze to death. As smoke erupted from her shaking jaw, Lizard couldn't help but wonder how it was that The Caterpillar had managed such magic. Or had he had it all along? Tricky little Monster.
Several more steps down the road a small fact began to sink in for Lizard, and the more she grasped at it the more she began to realize. "I'm not in Wonderland anymore...." She smiled.... "I'm not in Wonderland anymore...." She frowned..... "I'm not in Wonderland anymore"....She gasped. "I'M NOT IN WONDERLAND ANYMORE!"....She panicked. "WHERE AM I?!"
A sudden dizziness over came Lizard as she moved off the road to grab at a tree, anything to help her stay up. Breath in. Breath out. Breath in. Breath out. Lizard had been involved in so many crazy adventures, many of which had been at the Knave of Hearts's side, under the Caterpillar's orders, in the Red Queen's arm length, and yet none of them gave her the terrified feeling she was experiencing now. What had she gotten herself into?
A loud noise blared through the night, startling Lizard. Speeding down the road, shooting up water and smoke, was the most usual beast that she had ever seen. Its eyes were made of light, which temporarily blinded her as it reflected off of the rain. The beast stopped just feet away from Lizard, who didn't stick around long enough to see what it wanted, she bolted into the forest.
Running as nimbly as a soaked cat, Lizard shot over broken branches and deep puddles, no idea where it was that she was really going, just wanting to put as much distance between her and the monster as she could get. Falling, sliding, and knocking into trees, she raced blindly on, until she hit a clearing and was met with a wondrous sight. Lights. Hundreds of Lights.
Lizard stood in awe as she faced an incredible series of massive structures. Each building that lined either side of the strange road, held its own light, which out shined that of any candle she had ever seen. She stepped further into town, knowing without a doubt that she had finally reached Storybrooke. There were signs everywhere, giving each building a name as if it were a stone person. 'Mr Gold's Pawn Shop', 'Granny's Diner', 'Storybrooke Animal Shelter'. Lizard didn't know where to look first, her head kept shooting from side to side, until a monster just like the one in the forest, shot forward with a loud roar. Lizard glared back at the monster, she wasn't going to run again, it was time to teach the beast who was boss. The thing raced at her, but just as it was about to touch Lizard it bolted around her, and someone, a human, actually sat in the belly of beast. This person shouted out at her "Get out of the Road!".
Lizard took a step back, onto an even stranger road, one that people were walking on, more like running on, as they sheltered themselves under strange fabric coverings that they held over themselves with a silver stick. A few of the people stole glances at Lizard, but none of them stopped to question her, as if they saw people like her often enough, which filled her with hope.
"Excusssse meeeee", Lizard finally dared to approach two ladies, an older one with glasses, and a younger one with bright red lips.
They both looked concerned.
"I ammmmm soorrrry, I ammmmm neeeeew tooooo towwwwnnn. I commmme frrrrom Wonnnndeerlaaaaanddddd".
Their features changed to understanding, as the younger one replied, "you must have gotten separated from the others hunnie, quick, come inside, we'll get you some coffee to warm you up". They didn't wait for an answer, they quickly rushed Lizard into "Granny's Diner", where they sat her down in a strange seat and stuck a mug in front of her, along with a slice of pie. "Thhhhankkk yoooou", Lizard said, trying to fix them with her charming smile, but her lips just continued to quake. "Don't mention it", the older one said, as the two ladies went about to talk to other people.
Lizard took a bite, the pie was warm, so was the drink, they helped to stop some of the shaking. Hunched over, she tried to take in some of her surroundings, but then the door opened with a jingle of a bell and someone called out Lizard's name.
Rabbit!
Lizard gasped as she shot out of the chair to wrap Rabbit into a hug.
"Lizard! What are you doing here?! I heard you were dead!"
"Almost, and I do mean almost, but....oh its a long story".
Rabbit looked sympathetic, "its alright Lizard, you can tell everyone the story later. Lets get you to The Knave's place so we can clean you up".
"The Knave is here?" Lizard could scarcely believe her ears, which wasn't all that much of a surprise because she really couldn't believe any of her other senses either. Rabbit took Lizard's hand, then with a tap of his hat to the kind ladies, he led her back out into the rain, across the street, not even taking notice to any of the monsters that dodged out of the way to avoid hitting them, and right up to a large door. Rabbit gave it an excited knock.
Lizard stood, shaking, but from excitement or the cold, she couldn't tell anymore, as the front door was thrown open and there he was. The Knave of Hearts.
