Henry was suspicious, really suspicious, his friends were acting rather oddly today, well mainly Avery and Piper but still they were acting oddly. First they were both at the same time able to get permission to skip the end of school to go to the doctor's, and then after that they both said they had to be at a club instead of walking home with him. Also his mum was at home planning something he knew that, because well she rang him up to tell him he would have to make his way home by himself. He knew though that something was going on because he knew both Avery and Piper had no clubs that they went to. Firstly Avery would of told him as would of Piper, secondly and this was kinda embarrassing, but he certainly knew what Piper usually did today, mainly because he liked to know what she was doing so he could spend time with her, she was so amazing, and pretty. Avery and Piper also usually walked home with him, and Piper would usually go home before a club, so Henry was beginning to think that something was off, and that this something was to do with his birthday, he was sure of it. Yes that was right, today was Henry's birthday, he was finally twelve, he was almost a teenager now, this was going to be one of the best birthdays ever. Like most of his birthdays he got up really early, something his mum should be used to by now, however he let her sleep in a tiny bit before rushing into her room. She told him most of his presents would have to wait until later in the day, but she let him open one this morning, and he had been ecstatic when he found out what it was. It was the game he had been wanting for ages now, Diablo III, he had been asking his mum for it for some time now. Henry had played it before he went to school getting his character to at least level 5 before he left, and his mum had also played with him, having chosen a wizard. After that he had gone to school. He was almost home now having decided to head home a little early rather than go through the park he always went through and stay there for a bit, he knew his mum was up to something, she had to be for his friends to be acting so oddly. So he made his way home checking his phone as he did, to see if his mum had texted him at all, she hadn't. He just shrugged at that and decided to head on through the gate making sure the guy let him in before running up the stairs and once he got to the top he opened the apartment door. Today was a very special day to her best friend at least she considered Henry her best male friend and being friends meant throwing a wicked, surprise birthday for a boy turning thirteen years old. But the only problem with throwing a surprise party meant lying and keeping secrets which were two things Piper did not like to do, especially to Henry. The two became such good friends since they first meet when Piper brought over her mother’s homemade apple pie. Piper stood on the couch trying to put the streamers up on the wall. “Avery pass the tape.” Avery was a friend of Henry and hers but Piper didn’t like him much mostly because he teased Piper a lot. The little blonde grabbed the tape without looking and once she went to duct tape the steamer it was then she realized. “Avery! Duct tape! Really do you want Henry thinking we couldn’t afford real tap?”
Piper threw the duct tape at the snickering boy and jumped down from the couch. She would finish it later there was so much more to do like checking on the cake that Piper put together all Piper and Emma needed to do was bake it and put on the frosting. Piper looked over at Emma from the oven, “What did you get Henry for his birthday?” The girl asked while checking on the cake, it was rising nicely. Henry was going on about something during school maybe he was trying to tell Piper about his birthday present but she was too busy having her thoughts elsewhere. Like making sure that Henry had no clue about the party that Piper, Avery and Emma were planning.
They were finishing up the final touches, when Avery seen Henry from the window and yelled he was almost here. Piper ran around the house like a mad woman making sure everything was perfect. She knew it was going to be a perfect birthday; she made sure it was nothing but the best for Henry. Piper hid behind the couch out of sight not knowing where the rest was hiding. She listened for the door as it opened and Henry to call for his mother. Piper popped up from behind the couch and yelled “Surprise!” She wore a bright smile on her face.

Today was his best friends birthday and even Piper Tailor couldn't ruin it. Avery wasn't exactly thrilled he had to sneak around with her this whole time, but Henry's mother, Emma, had asked them both to work together to make this a special day. Avery liked Emma, she wasn't quite like other parents and he tended to act a little more calm when she was around. Other adults never took the time to get to know him, but because he and Henry were insperable, he had spent a lot of time with her.
He knew Henry wasn't going to buy into a lot of their excuses, as if he would EVER be a part of some stupid club. He assumed the idea was one of Piper's...
After school he and Piper headed over to Henry's apartment to work on it for the party. He watched as Piper decorated and Emma prepared food, flicking a lighter he had taken out of his pocket. He had no clue how to decorate anything, though the streamers looked pretty flammable.
As he pondered this, his thoughts were interupted by the most annoying sound ever. Piper's voice. She was asking him to do something. He rolled his eyes, stretched out his long legs and grabbed the first thing that looked like a roll of tape. He stood up off the couch and dangled it back and forth just to annoy her, until she grabbed it from him.
“Avery! Duct tape! Really do you want Henry thinking we couldn’t afford real tape?”, was her response. Like Henry cared? She threw the tape back at him and he batted it away with his free hand, laughing.
"Only girls care about that crap," He snided. Before he could come up with another nasty comment, he noticed Henry walking up. He instantly dropped down so Henry wouldn't spot him. "He's coming peeps!" He half-whispered/half-yelled at the others.
Avery watched as Piper rushed around. God was the girl an ass-kisser or what? They were here, there was presents and cake, what more would Henry give two craps about? He waited in his ducked down position until he heard Henry enter.
"SURPRISE CREEP!" He jumped up, grasping a bucket full of confetti and letting its contents fly at his best friend.

Happy Birthday Henry! Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday Dear Henry. Happy Birthday to you. She’d taken the day off obviously. How could she not? It was her son. Her only child. Well, for now that was. It was the kid’s 12th birthday. Twelve years old was nearly a teen and had to be a big thing for a kid. For Emma it just reminded her when she lost her foster sister Elizabeth. She would be giving birth to Heather soon. The father of the baby, Graham was a good man. He went to serve his country overseas. They were deeply in love and unfortunately he would not be there to see their daughter born. So handsome and the accent he had. She never could quite place it, but then did it ever really matter? No, not really. Glancing around the apartment, Emma couldn’t recall why she’d never had any pictures of Graham though. It did seem a bit odd. But she could picture him in her head. Henry remembered him too and that was what was most important. They got on so well. Emma had almost thought they would have made it together.
Needless to say now that she was almost seven months along her job was getting harder, so they had hired someone else to do the chasing and she was just doing the desk jockying. That was not her deal and she hated it. But that was life and one had to deal with the cards they were dealt.
Like in Boston last year the apartment building burned down and she and Henry moved to New York for a fresh start. It seemed to be working as well. He had some really good friends in Piper and Avery. If there was one thing that she was grateful for it was that Henry was happy. So far, their life was good and with the baby on the way, their family was going to be that much larger. Which was nice. She and Henry had been alone for so long. As she made lasagna for the kids.. well actually it was all for Henry's sake because that was his favorite. She made some hamburgers and hot dogs for the others just in case. Not many children their age liked lasagna as much as he. Emma had bought the cake because she couldn't spend too much time in the kitchen. Not only that. She was no Betty Crocker. It wasn't as though they tought classes at the orphanages and foster homes she stayed at when she was a kid. It was just getting too hot for her any more. Just about anything bothered her though. It was the pregnancy hormornes.
She'd felt Walsh's hands behind her and feeling her stomach gently. She couldn't help but laugh. They had not been dating more than a month or two, but both mother and son trusted the furniture store owner. "Hey, you know that the kids are in the other room and Henry will be home soon." Even he had taken the day off. Emma turned her head and kissed him. "Now go see how the kids are doing and make sure they don't kill each other." He knew Piper and Avery didn't get on well. Which generally meant they were faking it and they got along just fine. In fact it more than likely meant that they liked one another more than just friends.
As the food was cooling on the stove she'd considered the gift her son had opened in the morning. It was just the tip of the iceburg. Emma had gotten a great bonus for catching someone that was stupid enough that the police didn't even catch was wanted. He didn't come up on their radar. But when the guy called for a bailsponds person, Emma started to laugh because the guy was already wanted by her company for jumping bail the last time he'd been bailed out by her. So she bailed him out and brought him back to jail before leaving the building. This way she was able to collect the reward. .Then in the process, she'd let them know just how stupid they were for missing the fact that he was a bail jumper. So she'd gotten her reward money and her bail money back because the police were too stupid to notice that they had their suspect in custody already. Yes, Henry's mother had allowed him to open one gift which ended up being Diablo III; however there were other gifts still waiting for him. Obviously clothes, brand new Nike shoes, other things kids needed that parents gave them as 'joke' gifts. Granted some parents gave them as real gifts, but Henry and Emma knew they weren't the real ones. The real ones were hidden in a place that even he could not find. Walsh had taken it to his place.
Crap Henry was coming! "Hide everyone!" Walsh hid in the kitchen with Emma. The door handle was turning, when Emma turned to Walsh and whispered. "You brought his gift, right?" She said with an arched brow. There was a shaking of his head in jest. She would have hit him, but then his friends jumped out just as Henry said 'Mum, I'm home.' So she and Walsh jumped out with them. "Surprise Henry! Happy Birthday, Kid."

"twelve today! ------------------- Henry Swan ------------------- Henry when he thought about moving from Boston to New York, about the fire that had burned down their apartment, well when he had first thought about it, he had seen it as an incredibly bad thing. He had lost any friends he had made, they had lost the place they called home, they had lost something they were quite comfortable with at the time. Now though, well now Henry saw it as a good thing, he found a better school, got on better with the people there, it was easier to study and learn at that school as well. They had found a really good place to live, in a really good area of New York as well. Henry had been able to make two really good friends, and a few other friends, but his two best friends were the best he could ever ask for. He had done all sorts with them, it almost felt like he had never met friends like them before.
It wasn't just good for him here. It was good for his mom as well, she finally seemed to be getting her own happiness again, Not that she wasn't happy with him and that new baby on the way, but the happiness that had left her when Graham went off to war, and before he was born, when his dad got her sent to jail. Walsh had helped a lot with this, he could see it, every day more his mom was falling for him just more and more. He made her really happy, made her feel special. He really liked him he was cool guy and would make an awesome step dad. Walsh often helped him out on school projects when he really needed it, and made sure some of his ideas did not blow up in his face. He really hoped that one of them would purpose, he was sure it would be Walsh as he didn't see his mom doing it.
One of the best things about their place in New York was that it was safe enough for Heather, his new baby sister, he really couldn't wait for her to be born. when he had first found out he had been hoping for a boy. A brother to mess around with and teach cool things with, that wasn't the case though, instead he had a little sister, that didn't matter girl's could be cool as well. Piper his girlfriend, no not girlfriend a girl as a friend, why was he getting all flustered over that? Well Piper she was proof that girl's could be cool. He hoped that when Heather was old enough he could go on adventures around New York with her, show her all the cool things they could do. One thing he had promised both his mom, and Graham before he went to war, was that he would protect her from anything and everything, he would make sure she grew up to be healthy and well loved. He would make sure no harm ever came to her. His mom was seven months along.
This life could be seen in full as soon as he walked through that door and everyone yelled surprise, all those people that meant a lot to both him and Emma. When he saw them a mixture of emotions went through Henry's face, joy being the main emotions playing across it. Joy that everyone he loved, yes that meant Avery, but obviously more of as them being friends. That everyone he loved, that meant so much to him were there. That it looked also like that Piper and Avery had set their differences aside, well for now at least, but those two were always at each other.
Henry wasn't really surprised by the surprise, and that was mainly because he had been suspicious enough all day, but that didn't mean he was going to let them know he had realized. Henry stopped in the door way as they all, shouted surprise at him, and he stopped as if shocked. Henry's eyes for a little while ended up settled on Piper, and for some reason he felt a little shy all of sudden, his face went a little red and he gave her a wide smile, though it might of been a more silly smile than anything else, and it was also pretty obvious well it would be to Emma, Walsh and Avery, Piper maybe as well. Henry wasn't sure why he was acting so silly around her, he often found himself doing that. She was a very pretty girl though
He shook himself out of it for a moment and laughed a little at Avery's surprise, he was always calling him creep, just a nickname for it. He rubbed the confetti out of his hair messing it up the the process. "Avery!" Henry complained but more in a playful manner than anything. Then he turned to his mom with a big grin on his face. "Thanks mom, thanks a lot, best surprise ever," he looked up at her with a grin and gave her a gentle hug not wanting to squash the bay. "Thanks Avery, Walsh and P..p..piper" he finally got out going red again, did he really just do that? He couldn't believe he had just done that, in front of his mom too! He went out of the hug and quickly gave Walsh one as well. "This is sooo cool," Henry said looking at them all. This was going to be the best birthday ever. He looked at Piper and Avery, "so this is where you guys really went to," he winked at his best friend to let him know he hadn't been fooled. He looked around and noticed all the food, and some other stuff. "Is this really all for me mom?" An awful lot of work had gone into this,he could tell. "Thank you," he would of asked about his other present but he wasn't rude, he did keep glancing around though to see if there was any there, he was quite excited,

Everyone had found a hiding place just in time and the look on Henry’s face brought a smile on her own. The surprise party had remained a surprise right to the every end, not even Avery had managed to spill the surprise. Henry thanked everyone for the surprise party she noticed how he stutter and went red but didn’t think anything of it. Lately Henry seemed to act a little strange but Piper just chalked it up to being a boy and hanging around Avery too much. “I can’t believe we pulled this off, I thought you would have figure it out.” Piper said looking over to Henry.
The blonde frowned when she realized what Avery had called his best friend. She had heard that word coming out of Avery mouth a lot and she just shook her head in disapproval there was no point of saying anything to Avery cause he would just make a slide remark to her.
Piper walked over to her jacket and pulled out a bright green envelope inside was a homemade birthday card and a gift card to a clothing store. The blonde always had homemade cards it was thanks to her mother really liking to make almost everything homemade once her mother thought it would be fun project to make a pair of heels. Surprisingly Piper was very good at it but it was only a onetime thing only. Slowly she approached Henry with her gift in hand, “This is for you Henry” Piper smiled.

Avery grinned at Henry, catching his wink. Even though they hadn’t known each other for too long, they were close enough to understand what was going on with the other. The only reason he even tolerated Piper was for Henry’s sake, and he could tell immediately his best friend was shy around the girl. Maybe Avery didn’t see the appeal of the scrawny blonde; he didn’t really have many thoughts about any girl. In his whole 12 years he hadn’t found a girl who was cool, most of them just ratted him out. Piper had gotten him in trouble in the past, and he assumed she would do the same if she had another chance. “No problem man, wouldn’t be a proper birthday without a surprise.” He nodded eagerly while giving his friend a look to confirm they both knew it wasn’t a real surprise. If Piper thought he was, well then she wasn’t very bright. He watched as she brought over Henry a card. A card? Seriously, how boring. Leave it to a girl. Avery snorted slightly, trying not to be heard. Because his parents were quite well off, Avery had begged them to allow him to get his allowance in advance to buy Henry’s present. Two presents were stacked neatly near Henry’s other presents waiting to be opened. Avery had bought him a video game he had been asking for, and also a brand new paintball gun. For weeks he had been begging his friend to go with him, but Henry didn’t have his own gun. Luckily, the creep had a birthday so Avery had an excuse to buy him one. Though he was excited to give Henry his gifts, he had to bug Piper just a little more. “I don’t think it’s time for presents yet Piper, I mean he just got here and we have all this amazing food to eat. Right Ms. Swan?” He flashed Henry’s mom a bright smile, the type he always used around parents. He didn’t have to pretend to be nice to Emma, she was pretty cool and a lot more lay back than other parents. Emma Swan Henry Mills Piper Tailor
